6V50 failed, Hungerford, down line, Thu 16/4/26

6V50 1421 Wembley Receptions 1-7 to Merehead Quarry (Fhh) has failed in the Hungerford area blocking line for 2 hrs so far. 1Z99 is no on way up from (I assume) Westbury and has arrived near Bedwyn. No trains through area and Bedwyn shuttles cancelled, through trains via Swindon. Have...

    GWR touch card issue?

GWR Touch cards seen to have an issue and I keep bringing waved through barriers. The ticket machines also can't see my topped up card at all. Ticket office staff have suggested it's linked to the GWR website upgrade (everyone needs a new password, things being migrated between systems) but it...

GWR from Paddington, ticket restriction C4

A question, is the bar on using this ticket in he evening on GWR only applied to joining at Paddington, or can Elizabeth line trains be used to access GWR at Slough/Maidenhead/Twyford? (Even where the GWR train being boarded has left Paddington between 1600-1900) The reference pages quote on...

    717(?) Welwyn-St Neots-Biggleswade 21/12/25

There seems to be a working in which on Realtime trains is allocated 717001, it is currently running as 5Q98. It may not be a 717 I realise. Is this some form of ECTS test and is this the first 717 beyond Hitchin on the main line towards Biggleswade on power or is this a relatively regular...

    10 cars Paddington-Bedwyn...1K32 8/12/25 nearly 802008/019

...and for once wasn't not a RTT/set swap ssue, as I have observed with mk 1 eyeball. The units are due to be going on to Stoke Gifford, this week as a 5+5 it seems rather than being a 5 that reverses to Paddington in the siding. Rear set 802019 out of use. However... Train was given the...

    Stevenage/Hitchin, 7/12/25 disruption

4L98 Doncaster Iport-Lomdon Gateway, headed by 66776 has been sat on the up slow north of Hitchin since about 1120 this am. In platform 1 at Stevenage is what shows as 0J36 but seems to be some form of Railhead Treatment Train, it's dark but there's an EWS 66 north end and then a GBRf at south...

Motive Power Monthly, 1990/1991, anyone considering getting rid of?

Hello In the midst of rounding up a few issues to replace the ones I got rid of all those years ago. If anyone is about to throw out 1990/1991 please let me know! Thanks.

    Crossing failure, 30/6/25

Never seen trains going through a crossing with the barriers up before due to a failure, but first time for everything...assume that at some point someone in a van arrives to manually get them down so they aren't up?

    1K27 1800 Newbury - Paddington 17 June 2025: Turbo vice 387

Formed 165128, fast Reading to London. Not happened for a while that I've noticed, but delighted the quiet 2 car Turbo in Newbury platform 3 is not a failed Bedwyn shuttle

28/4 (and 29/4) Down line points failure Southcote Junction, Reading-Newbury

Failed in the afternoon on Monday 28 April. Up trains could get through as could anything on the Basingstoke line. It was just down trains to the Newbury line impacted (and any returns) The problem was announced fixed and the 1710 Reading-Newbury was advertised as reinstated and running. It got...

    Super off peak on Saturdays

I (from GWR land) met someone from GN land in London on Saturday. I had an off-peak Travelcard and they had a Super Off Peak. I didn't have the Super Off Peak as an option when purchasing, it was only when we compared prices and tickets as we are both about the same distance from London. Just...

    DMU standins

Another post inspired by an old Motive Power Monthly, the November 1989 edition has a 3 car Reading Class 101 L835 covering the Poole-Liverpool (seen at Liverpool, doesn't confirm where it started) Even if it started at Reading or Oxford, still a fair way...anyone beat that on a substitution basis?

    EMUs to Preston

Hello Rereading Motive Power Monthly 1989 (wish I had 1990 onwards, it's incredible)...I know over the years there have been a few posts relating to EMUs heading North so this log felt significant, mentioning 303, 304 and 317s?

89001 pre first withdrawal with Mark 4s?

Simple really...did it ever happen? Can anyone provide a photo or any evidence that as the Intercity liveried 89001 in late 1989/early 1990, it dropped onto a Mark4/225 set. Have had a bit of a trawl, but not found anything as yet. I remember it whistling past on Mk1s, Mk2s, Mk3s but only Mk4s...

Last train of night, forgot to stop at the starting station

...has just happened. Will pick up with TOC. Help point said 'it called' (it didn't, based on the mk 1 eyeball, but as at ran through, it shows it did). Help point them cut out and could not be reached again. Taxi was amazingly possible (and £65) ..all logged on the social media of the TOC...

    FirstGroup and Great Western

As it will be coming to an end at some point relatively soon, just to note that First have basically had Great Western ever since it was first franchised, initially as a partner in Great Western Trains, then buying it out, and through various shapes and not many actual tenders. I assume some of...

    'Test Coach', Derby Works, 1989

From the 4/1989 Motive Power Monthly, photo by and (c) Brian Morrison, just struck me even as a 'for testing panint' as being rather an odd, unusual thing. Anyone know any more?
