On Trenitalia does red fabric on the seat indicate it's reserved?

The ones I remember seeing somewhere definitely were.

    “Showing someone up”

As I descend the stairs at Bristol Parkway, I currently often see an advert thanking the London Marathon for “showing up people with autism”. My understanding of the expression was that to “show someone up” was to highlight their failings or inadequacies (etc) with the intention of belittling...

Which foreign rolling stock could be adapted for the British loading gauge?

Though platform height is a significant factor. Central European “low platforms” have no impact on the width of stock as they barely reach above rail height.

What should the numbering layout of Edinburgh Waverley station be?

With a “circular”station like Waverley there is always going to be a “logic gap” somewhere - unless you number the separate ends completely separately. The “oddity” with the Waverley I grew up with was starting the numbering where it did - though that meant that the main London platform was “1”...

The Labour Party under Andy Burnham

Never confuse what is said with what is done. The vital things that you’ve listed are, once gets into the detail, way above most people’s heads (including mine, I hasten to add). We have a party that is feeding off the notion that the “establishment” isn’t interested in their problems and a...

Shouldn’t that be “children under 5 travelling free”….?

Would the planned TPE units also be suitable for GWR?

The battery needs to be able to cope with the distance plus (maybe) supplying hotel power for a couple of hours on a winter night while a blockage is cleared and still be able to get to its destination. Ideally, it should be able to cope with at least one opportunity for recharging not being...

On Trenitalia does red fabric on the seat indicate it's reserved?

I’ve definitely seen something similar (though more official looking - with a red “sleeve” round the seats.) have a feeling that was Italy.

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

Given that the chance of someone actually having used the seat between cleans was pretty low, is that surprising. That said, I only remember seeing all the other surfaces being “cleaned” (pretty thoroughly by EMR; very perfunctorily at another TOC); not the seats.

… as a long-term quantity. I’d also. E tempted to exclude prototypes and “concept provers”.

Getting the most out of the new Alstom units for TPE?

    European timetables 2027

Funding has not been the main reason for the sclerotic progress of the Bremen / Hamburg / Hannover “Ausbau” over the last 60 (yes, really!) years. No doubt that that lack of progress has pleased those who didn’t want to spend money, even though more will be spent in the long run.

    European timetables 2027

There can be few examples in Western Europe where a country has suddenly had to turn its long-term infrastructure on its head almost overnight as Germany had to in 1990. Western projects that weren’t already committed or critical to avoid immediate collapse had to be put on the back-burner for...

Strange signal near St John's on BBC report

A lot will come down to who was talking to whom when names started being codified - just down the road from Tipton St J is Ottery St Mary (no ‘s at all) - I suspect that at one point both names were a bit like the modern day Tesco / Tesco’s and each has settled down by happenstance on different...

Has the government ever consulted on closing a station and then NOT closed it?

There were quite a few examples of that. Whether any /all of them actually got as far as formal closure procedures is another matter.

Any harm...

Has the government ever consulted on closing a station and then NOT closed it?

Subsequent to the Summer only Dalesrail service, the currently open intermediates were reopened on a full time basis in (?) 1986, despite the ongoing closure proposals.
