UK Government publishes National Rolling Stock strategy.

Although it would be putting operations before existing traffic flows, there’s nothing to stop some routes being rejigged to include more time under existing wires, as well as adding a few extra “islands”.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Presumably because , in the case of something going awry, there was no other way of showing how the cheque had been made out in the first place.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

When living in Germany I always made sure to stock uo on Paracetamol when back in the UK. Far easier and less bureaucratic.

Has someone done a full cost and timescale assessment of implementing a fully-automated railway?

With no disrespect intended to the hare, the fact that the train “felt the need” to slow down for it shows there’s a long way to go - especially on a congested network rather than a bucolic branch line. Sheep are different!

    Cheadle station

Without having seen the site, the “obvious” solution is to build a permanent platform (with all fixtures, fittings and associated services) to serve the currently non-existent second track then “bolt” some pre-fab modular platform in front of it, that is robust enough to be a permanent solution...

Copenhagen 'tourist tax' on non-EU card payments

A very “non-German” tip, by the sound of things. Can report from Estonia one card payment had 33cents added while a card payment at one of their ubiquitous coffee machines took the quoted price only. I’m just imagining what would happen to free standing coffee vending machines in parks in the UK!

    Class 175s to GWR

That of course assumes that there is a finalised version of a GBR livery. If there isn’t, then GW green is as good as any.

Tallinn - Riga - Vilnius tips and recommendations please

Given the spread of electrification in Estonia (including routes seeing 4-5 trains per day in each direction), their days are presumably numbered - unless a power-module swap happens.

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

Well, he does - mostly foreign ones trying diplomatically not to wince at the latest Trumpism.

You know you’re getting older when……

Glad I’m not the only one (and I haven’t even reached that figure yet). Strangely enough, it seems to be an aberration limited to Sunday mornings, when I’m not in a hurry and am treating myself to “real” coffee.

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

I should imagine that the arrival of the University complex is going to be the catalyst for a lot of changes. More development coming as well. When I think how dead the area was when I first came to Bristol 40 years ago…

New mandatory ticket area sign at Birmingham Snow Hill

Can’t think of any other reason to do so - what’s more, it works - particularly so when they were a novelty.

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

Temple Meads certainly has its faults (those you’ve named being the main ones). However, merely being there doesn’t have the same effect as a Dementor’s Kiss. On a practical note, isn’t there a second subway that, subject to spending money, could be brought into use?

    Far-flung Euro coins

As one of the earliest “euro coin spreaders” (spending some of the contents of my German pre-issue starter pack in Belgium on the first working day after conversion) I’ve always been fascinated by the spread of “foreign issues” around the Eurozone. Prompted by the receipt this morning of an...

EMR Sprinter only using one door?

Gets a bit confusing if you’re not used to it when boarding at Bristol TM - the announcement (correctly) refers to the front coach for Avoncliff etc, but you need to be in the know to realise that that’s the rear coach as the train pulls in from Filton.
