Noise protocols for overnight rail services

Trees also work well as a sound-baffle - but only when in leaf!

Lineside vegetation - should we employ more sheep?

There used to be a tethered goat on the cutting side between Sydney Gardens and Bathampton Junction (by Hampton Row for the locals). The perfect circle of cropped grass was remarkable.

Possibility of Stansted Express 745 units moving to Great Eastern?

If “a lot more collision damage than expected” is happening then 18 from 20 is clearly not fine as someone has been over optimistic in their assessment of likely non-availability through issues other than maintenance.

Noise protocols for overnight rail services

Not an answer to the question - but I can remember lying in bed as a kid listening to Deltics open up as they set off from Edinburgh on the southbound overnights. They would have been about 3 miles away, so I can only imagine what it must have been like in the (tgen certainly single-glazed) line...

Can people just pay by card instead of using cash?

It’s strange how “freedom of choice” is such a marvellous thing - until that choice is to stick with what you’ve always done.

Portishead Approved - Construction Updates Thread - No speculation

Well,. if all of the drainpipes are as securely fixed to the structure as the one on the right, there is presumably a fairly high risk of one of them coming down on your head!

The Labour Party under Andy Burnham

The removal of auto-renew on various insurance policies left me without cover for several weeks. I thought it had auto renewed, but somewhere on about page 3 it pointed out that this was no longer an option. It was only when I realised the premium hadn’t been taken that I spotted it. OK - it was...

Why people are so stuborn not using their ticket but rather showing to staff to open gates?

With e-tickets isn’t it more of the case that certain “suspicious flows” will be programmed to reject and require human monitoring (Vauxhall - Waterloo-for example)

    Finding walking routes in Scotland

During a lockdown ramble I found the legal notices for the diversion of the river Avon towpath between Newbridge and Saltford which unlike many such, was a right of way. Problem was that when the river was realigned in the early 1970s no one thought about the RoW along its bank, so officially...

The Labour Party under Andy Burnham

Ultimately, the only reason for having auto-renew at the end of a free trial is to catch people who aren’t so convinced of the product that they want to keep going with it. Companies should at the very least have to remind you in time that your paid subscription is about to kick in. Auto renewal...

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

No doubt, in common with most motorists they are all in favour of restrictions - but only ones that only affect other people. “Traffic” is other people!

Remember Jim Hacker’s amazement on entering No 10 at the remarkably small amount of “work” (in the sense that a minister would understand it) that a PM actually “has” to do.

On Trenitalia does red fabric on the seat indicate it's reserved?

Then it will have been in Italy that Ice seen them - still in place this year. (TPER) Guessing the guard discovered they weren’t on this train.

    “Showing someone up”

Though I think that has for a long time depended on whether or not an object is mentioned. It’s ok to show off something (you’re proud of) - within reason, whereas showing (yourself) off is pejorative. Note - I would also see “flaunting” as negative.

Stations with poor facilities of an evening

Yes and no. The yes in terms of not demanding inflated commercial rent in return for extended opening hours - especially when the alternative is an empty boarded up unit.

    “Showing someone up”

That’s possibly it, then and I’ve just missed the “for”. Seems in itself an odd usage to use in connection with an event organiser given the other established use of “show up” (= attend, turn up).
