    South Wales 'Metro' updates

Contractually (ie pay back the money or not) it’s the letter that counts.

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

It would also help if it were in standard station signage format - I think I’d look at that from a distance and assume it was “art”.

    Riviera Line improvements

Loses the security advantage of near direct access. Unfortunately it looks as if we’re heading back into times where that needs to be a consideration.

Metropolitian line and Beeching: what might have happened?

At the frequency of long-distance express services we expect today, probably not. At the frequency they actually ran, possibly.

Sadiq Khan says future of Heathrow Express should be ‘reconsidered’ due to Elizabeth line success

Though there’s a big difference between “working AT Heathrow” and working FOR Heathrow” (presumably a much smaller number).

    Main line balloon loops

Isn’t that a spiral, though (ie you can’t use it to go back the way you’ve just come?)

    Main line balloon loops

Coquelles and Cheriton immediately spring to mind. There’s also one on the Selketalbahn if that counts.

TfW class 398 Stadler Citylink tram trains

I’m sure I remember reading that emergency provision was now made somewhere in Europe following an expensive (for the railway) court ruling. Can’t remember where or when, though.

TfW class 398 Stadler Citylink tram trains

And the implication is that either a) TfW allowed a training run to go ahead using a unit with defective brakes or b) a hitherto unknown problem arose which caused the train to overrun and yet other trains have been allowed to continue in service. Either variant seems pretty serious.

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

Though the challenge of accessing all in-use platforms on one platform ticket (pre Open Station) would now be unachievable!

    December 2026 Timetable Change

Though it depends on whether use ;or not) of a “spare” unit between Glasgow and Edinburgh has any bearing on the capacity problems elsewhere. If the set is in Edinburgh at the time it can’t alleviate capacity problems between Reading and Birmingham - whether it’s going to Glasgow and back or not.

Trivia: Where tracks from traditional UK tramways still exist

Definitely the docks’ internal rail system. I learnt to ride a bike in there in the early 70s and twin perils of falling into the dock (fortunately never happened) or into the rail-groove (quite frequently) very quickly taught me to concentrate! Still BR shunters pottering about as far in as the...

What should the numbering layout of Edinburgh Waverley station be?

Sure north and south are used somewhere…

What should the numbering layout of Edinburgh Waverley station be?

If all the through platforms are split then you could be even more radical (which is where my East and West comes in) - divide the station into an East and West end for numbering and start with 1 at each end - platforms 3 - 9 East and West wouldn’t actually meet in the middle, but that wouldn’t...

Disruption across the Netherlands due to "Sabotage"

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

The circular numbering system worked reasonably well with the old layout, even if it did produce the odd 1/19 combination, as it was a simple clock-face. The “reopening” of the sub platforms was the only real complication. It’s the addition of extra through platforms with separate stairs etc...
