What was the last pre-nationalisation built rolling stock on the mainline?

Some of the stick used on the original “Royal Scotsman” was pretty vintage. Don’t know how long that continued running after launch in the mid 80s.

BBC: UK's third-biggest taxpayer to leave for Greece

IIRC, the de minimis amount on individual imports is shortly to be cut so we will be.

First West of England (Bristol, Bath & The West)

Some longer EV single deckers (43001 er seq) have put in an appearance this week.

And whether any money is changing hands until the trains are actually fit for service. If it is then someone should be looking for a new job.

“Extreme day trippers” on the rise

I wonder how it compared to the the reactions of a French check to this driver of a German registered (empty) van, wielding a UK passport but answering their questions in their own language. A few double takes that day!

    Station pilots

Didn’t Marylebone retain one until remarkably late on(early 90s)?

That surely depends entirely on the nature of the issue. People coming to something new will react differently to it from people who have been used to somethings foibles over 20 years. Doesn’t make either position necessarily “right”.

Travelling to and from Europe on Interrail pass

But what counts as “travel from an airport”? Specific example - arrive into Manchester too late for onward travel (by design) so book hotel in central Manchester (or anywhere for which the local station is not Manchester Airport). Use “inbound day” the following day to travel to final...

Short intercity trains should be hurled into the sun

Connections from Paddington at Bristol Temple Meads

Just how much demand is there from stations east of Bath to Bristol - Taunton line intermediates?

Loco-hauled services (diesel or electric) from Belgrade Central or Zagreb Glavni.

The counter argument is that it had to stay open while the old central station was open as that couldn’t be accessed from that direction ;IIRC). Now it makes more sense (for connectivity) to run everything into Centar, assuming that’s what they do. It’s not as if Dunav was the model of a modern...

    Relocating the UK's capital city

The Prime example of a geographically diffused country (from a European perspective at least) has to be West Germany where for very understandable reasons the deliberate decision was made to chose an insignificant place (sorry Bonn) as the site for the provisional capital, with the other state...

Comparison of bus vs rail usage for justifying rail line reopenings

Given the fact that the market segments best suited to rail and bus are not identical (light rail/tram and bus are of course closer) those two statements both have validity and cannot be taken as gospel!

Trivia. Stations which are busier at the weekends than in the week.

As a regular user it wouldn’t surprise me if Bath’s figures on some Saturdays exceeded weekdays, despite the commuting. Certainly on the run-up to Christmas.

    North Filton / Brabazon

In terms of destinations, Patchway offers nothing that Filton AW doesn’t. Parkway loses out on inner-Bristol connections but is good for moving larger quantities into Wales. It also has a large car park which may well have capacity at the sort of times many events take place. Presumably the...
