Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

I found Waverley confusing earlier in the year, but mostly because the old layout is so firmly implanted in my brain that the idea that a Queen Street fast would be leaving from platform 8 (which to my brain is 21) took the best part of 5 minutes to sink in!

Death rate at British Rail vs Coal Board in the 1980s

Risk to crew (no crumple zone) versus risk to staff on-track (can’t be seen), presumably.

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

You have, in my view, successfully located the only large station that makes New Street look user-friendly for the traveller - that being Stratford. Several others are sub-optimal but at least recognise what the prime purpose of a railway station is.

"X for Y" - stations that should perhaps have another name added to them but don't have at present

Which, given the fact that Rosyth (Halt) is the next station, was a bit cheeky and confusing unless you were coming from the north.

Has the government ever consulted on closing a station and then NOT closed it?

Nowhere - it was just a report with recommendations.

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

If one is confident of ability to use the things or hasn’t found that the only ones that take cash are all showing “card only”. The situation I was referring to was occasioned by poorly- printed and applied reduction stickers (creased barcodes and illegible numbers)and a desire not to stress the...

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

I If only! “Someone will be with you in a minute” - then, five or six minutes after you’ve put your stuff on the conveyor at one till, surly staff member slouches up to the next till along and opens it.

    Caledonian Sleeper

Not everyone will be - but in denying them to solo travellers who would be prepared to share they are making things difficult for a not insignificant number of travellers. OK if someone who was prepared to share ends up not having to, then the operator has list out - but if you charged (say) 55...

Indeed - those latter tasks being beyond a sizeable proportion of native speakers (and not just of English - I speak as a non-native German speaker who remembers having to explain German contracts to Germans)

Connections from Paddington at Bristol Temple Meads

Well, the missed connection off the Oxford is irrelevant as the connection is made at Bath and the Cardiff arrival is the Portsmouth via Bath train (so doesn’t need to “connect”. The Exeter and Avonmouth ones are less ideal, but as has been pointed out, you can’t have everything and both...

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

“Last time I used this station I used the green lounge so this sign doesn’t apply to me - only those who need to access a platform via the red lounge , whoever they are”. 1789373036 The difference being that in general you go down one set of steps to go in one direction and the other one to go...

What has happened to the no longer used railway lines?

At least one tunnel was at one point in use as a shooting range (Devizes), while IIRC others have housed mushroom farms.

How difficult is it to arrive or leave at all timetabled platforms. 5 year project to achieve this.

(Canty work out how to delete the table in my reply) Are any of the scheduled to stop at the Liw Level station, though. The one I failed to catch twice within 15 minutes in May certainly didn’t!

    Class 175s to GWR

Whether there should or shouldn’t was not my point. Someone coming new to something (it’s not the thing that is new, but their interaction with it) is more likely to see something as a (potential) major difficulty than someone who has been interacting with that something for years and has got...

What was the last pre-nationalisation built rolling stock on the mainline?

In similar vein - though not as long-lived- the 1940 Waterloo and City stock , which had the distinction of spending its entire life working the same trains (for obvious reasons) - no cascade onto humbler duties!
