Why people are so stuborn not using their ticket but rather showing to staff to open gates?

One of the gates at Bath Spa does this with depressing regularity.

    Oddball Journeys (Trivia)

The W&W 158 operated services did load well (and survived - albeit truncated) until the beginning of this decade. The “ fresh air movers” were the GW HSTs to Waterloo.

    December 2026 Timetable Change

Pedant alert - Turbo, not Turbostar!

    Oddball Journeys (Trivia)

Exactly - though they were probably worth a punt.

    Oddball Journeys (Trivia)

Less successful were FGW’s direct HSTs into Waterloo - partly no doubt precisely because they didn’t tap into any previously non-served domestic market.

I had to crawl on my hands and knees to get off train, says disabled woman

Not always audible; not always listened to - and indeed there’s always the possibility that someone doesn’t realise a wheel chair won’t fit through a standard gangway until they try.

A scam phone calls and emails discussion.

Not only live, but likely to be answered and not a call centre!

I had to crawl on my hands and knees to get off train, says disabled woman

It may mean that at least one door of all carriages iis adjacent to the platform, thus solving the ramp problem.

Should trains have yellow rear ends to reduce collisions?

Well - DB used red with a white stripe or bib from the late 1980s onwards. Previous liveries (the electrics’ dark green or blue in particular) were almost deliberately inconspicuous, so I’m not sure about “traditionally”.

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

He’s not the first leader with excessive dreams of power to be obsessed with architecture!

    Notepad people

Must have been the “what all enthusiasts should have” that year as I think that was when I was given mine. It met an untimely end on Swindon station a couple of years later…

Does Network Rail have an over-engineering problem?

Over the course of time, yes, though I suspect the tendency to experience all four seasons before lunchtime drops as the climate becomes more continental. In terms of vertical structures, I suspect the toughest feature of our climate is wind - but even there, the difference is probably how often...

Does Network Rail have an over-engineering problem?

Though with a very few exceptions (Dawlish Sea Wall being one), I doubt there are many locations on our network exposed to weather more extreme than somewhere not that far away on a Northern European railway network.

Does Network Rail have an over-engineering problem?

How much work gets done on signal heads (or anything else “up there”) while trains are still running on the line they control?

What I think is wrong with current OHLE electrification practice

Germany is (not that there are many significant ones left)

What I think is wrong with current OHLE electrification practice

ECML to Tweedbank and back on a freezing winter’s day when you’ve got to allow for keeping passengers warm during a lengthy delay and still have enough power to get back would be pushing it, for a start. And don’t forget lead times - we’re re not starting from “today” but from several years ago...

"ScotRail Express" What is the point of this brand?

“Brought back” rather than brought in. I would think it dates back to 1985/86 - whenever it was that ScotRail became a “thing”.

    South Wales 'Metro' updates

That would be true if the reason for redoubling were to be to add yet more services. If the point is to improve the reliability / resilience of the service at the maximum throughout of that bridge, then it’s not - though good luck with justifying the cost on those grounds alone!
