    Use of horns

Considering the concern recently about fatalities on level crossings, I can't help wonder if the rules on horn use are not playing a part. I remember until the changes, travelling on trains along many routes the horn would constantly be going. These days you hardly hear the horn at all unless...

Preseved Leicester buses destroyed in arson.

Just heard that at least two preserved Leicester buses have been destroyed in an arson attack on the barn they were in. Definitly Leicester 16, LJF16F, Leyland PD3. Other is possibly 301, Metropolitain. Some others damaged, including possibly Bridgemaster that was featured in buses.

    Loughborough to Blackpool - 3/11 - 8-11

I'm travelling to Blackpool from Loughborough on Thursday 3rd of November and coming back on Tuesday 8th (last weekend of the proper trams) and have an off peak return with a 18-25 Railcard (perks of a part time Uni course, despite having a few years ontop) showing at £31.95. The cheapest...

    375/6 Pantographs

Can anyone remember what the reason was for some of the 375s being fully equipped for dual voltage operation? The two things I seem to recall was either in relation to running domestic services on HS1 (they were ordered well before it was decided to go for the 395s), or to do with the East...

    HSTs at Loughborough

Here are a pair of videos I took from the bridge at Loughborough this evening. The first is a HST heading through none stop at 100mph. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP2oZoPr3Z0 The second is 43055 leading a northbound HST out of the station, and as I was filming it a NR test train went...

Greater Anglia Invitation to Tender - 21st April 2011

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/rail/passenger/franchises/greater-anglia/invitationtotender.pdf One interesting thing stands out to me from this. It's the first on the rolling stock list, 3 class 86s. Are we going to see 86s return on regular passenger work? I presume they would be for extra London...

    Daily Mail tube map

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__MbZY_gKBMU/TEBhg_xlpAI/AAAAAAAAA_A/x-U44hkLO7E/s1600/mail-tube-map-medium-large.png Interesting version of the Tube Map, as the Daily Mail's Moral Underground. Some of the stations are so funny, particularly the South West of the Cancer Line (immigrant cancer...

Lincoln to Nottingham via Newark Northgate

Reading another thread has just reminded me of a question that's come to me a few times. Some Lincoln to Nottingham trains call at both Newark Northgate and Newark Castle, reversing at Northgate and then again once back onto the Lincoln line. I've only done it once, on a Sunday, and the driver...

    Detailed London Underground Map

http://carto.metro.free.fr/documents/CartoMetroLondon.v1.0.pdf Just been directed to this great map which shows in detail the London Underground and Overground Network, including all running lines, sidings, junctions, currently used and disused and disused stations. Pretty up to date too...

    Bus cuts.

Just found out that Hinkley, a town in Leicestershire, could loose the majority of it's bus routes as the major operator (Centrebus) is looking to close it's depot. It's one of those areas with a large elderly population, so most travel for free, and since the council is reducing the funding for...

Very strange device on class 86 roof.

Looking at some old photos I came across these two. I remember the train arrived quite delayed and another train took it's next run out (Anglia used to have quite a layover in Norwich so trains could step up onto an earlier service if needed), and on going up to the loco I noticed the pantograph...

    TOPs numbering

I'm wondering if anyone knows how TOPs numbers are allocated to new locos and units. I know about the different types, but I mean who decides on the exact number? When it comes to DMUs and EMUs, the BR ones were mostly in order, 1st generation DMUs being 101 to 131, Pacers 140 to 144, Sprinters...

    Multiple liveries on one train

Talking about "Project Rio" (MMLs London to Manchester service during the WCML blockades) got me thinking about how many of the HST sets were in multiple liveries, and how since privatisation this has been something that has been fairly common with HSTs and hauled stock (and on occasion units)...

Types you regret missing out on.

I'm sure we all have certain types of trains we regret never travelling on. Perhaps drivers have certain types that they regret never managing to drive. In my case it would be the early AC EMUs. Whilst 302s, 303s, 304s, 305s, 309s and 310s were all around at a time when I could have travelled...

    Things you don't see everyday.

Here's a blast from the past and something you wouldn't see these days. The train had arrived from London with 86215 on the front and 86218 dead on the rear. On arrival 08810 was sent out from Crown Point to collect the presumably dead 218 and the train and take it back to the depot, whilst 215...

    Odd fitting above HST windows?

Just looking at some old photos and noticed something interesting on these two. Both powercars have a lighter strip above the windscreen, and some kind of box in the centre. Any idea what?

    Worst rail trip ever.

Based on similar threads, what is everyones worst trip by rail they have ever been on. I'm refering to the whole journey, from leaving to getting back, with the only stipulation being that a significant part of the problem has to be rail related. Mine would be some years back when First Great...

Generally popular trains that you have good reason to dislike.

Does anyone else have a particular train type that is generally well regarded but they look down on due to personal experiance? In my case it's the 158, just because travelling on them back in Central trains days I had so many issues due to them, in fact I know for a fact I've built up more...

    Shuttle loco in Loughborough

About 2 this afternoon I saw a Shuttle Loco heading through Loughborough from Brush towards the motorway. Any idea what it was doing? Annoyingly it was too quick to get my camera out, plus I was driving at the time. I'm fairly sure it was one of the 97 batch (the later build).

    Loughborough to Lowestoft 9/9/10

I need to travel from Loughborough to Lowestoft on Thursday 09th September. I was shocked to find the single price is nearly £50 and that's with a railcard! I presume AP will be cheaper (to Norwich) but how could I find the best combination since it's 2 or 3 operators?
