Here's a blast from the past and something you wouldn't see these days. The train had arrived from London with 86215 on the front and 86218 dead on the rear. On arrival 08810 was sent out from Crown Point to collect the presumably dead 218 and the train and take it back to the depot, whilst 215 was released and followed out under it's own power. Unusual not only seeing an 08 at a mainline station (few if any have TPWS or OTMR for going on the mainline these days), but with the exception of the FO behind the loco, it even was in the right colours.

Whilst we're on the subject of failures, here's another you don't see that often. Something must have failed with the DVT north of Peterborough, so the 91 was run around and dragged the train from there to Kings Cross, still in service (and quite late). Imagine these days it would have been cancelled and run straight to Bounds Green ECS.

Just to finish off the set when it comes to push pull sets being hauled from the wrong end, here is a shot of a Virgin West Coast train just arrived at Manchester with the 87 at the front as normal, but coupled to the DVT. The 87 then ran around and hauled the train as normal back south.

When i was a spotter in the 1980's most large stations had a station pilot. At derby station (my home town) a class 08 would regulary lead out a rake of mk2 coaches with a class 45 on the front to form a train. Of course the mk2a,b and c's along with the class 45's have long gone. And i dread to think how many 08's are left.

Well if we combine all the ones on various preserved lines, on the mainline itself and on various industrial sites I would expect in the region of a 200 or so.

I suspect the 08s will outlive us all!
