Reading another thread has just reminded me of a question that's come to me a few times. Some Lincoln to Nottingham trains call at both Newark Northgate and Newark Castle, reversing at Northgate and then again once back onto the Lincoln line. I've only done it once, on a Sunday, and the driver did not change ends at either reversal. How is this done? I would assume the easiest and most sensible way would be to have a qualified driver as the guard who could drive the train from Northgate to the reversing point, and then resume being a guard. Then again this is the railways, so the more likely option seems to be to have a second driver who just drives that short distance. Quite ovious the driver did not reverse the train without changing ends, not only would that not be allowed, but I remember hearing the AWS test as the front cab was opened up before we continued towards Nottingham. I know the driver did not change ends as they did not leave the cab (unless drivers are able to teleport).

Nothing would surprise me about anything to do with Lincolnshire. I boarded a train at Sleaford not that long ago headed for Lincoln. The guard hopped out complete with ticket machine having opened the doors, the driver left the cab, the guard got in, the driver shut the doors and the guard drove the train to Metheringham with the driver doing the doors where they swapped back.

It really is like a different world at times.

Whenever I've done this, the driver changes ends at Northgate, then again once back onto the Lincoln - Nottingham line. This means a lovely stop by the sewage works! Presumably they must have had two drivers on this occasion.

Hi all.

Finally a question about my home town yay .

On some occasions there are 2 drivers on this service as 1 is booked to go back to Nottingham.

So helps the driver roasted by driving from NNG to NCT this in turn saves the rostered driver the trouble of swapping cabs and walking through the train.

The driver that is going back to Nottingham then stays in the rear cab and alights at Nottingham, where he will be roasted to take another train.

It doesn't happen all the time that's why you will see the driver change ends on one train and not on another hope this helps you all.

All the best.

Simon.

P.S. Codes for people who don't know:-

NNG - Newark NorthGate.
NCT - Newark Castle

It's something to do with the wide open damp fens, the moon and the loneliness.
I worked there for 8 years. ;) ;)

P.S. I would hate to spoil your fun by reminding you Newark's in Nottinghamshire!!

Presumably the second Driver would be booked to travel 'pass' on that particular service and choose to assist, rather than it being part of his diagram.
