Introduction of European Entry-Exit Scheme (EES)

I'll be glad to see the back of stamps. I'm in and out of the EU a lot and my passport is getting full. I do nearly have the full set of cross channel ferry ports though: Dunkerque, Calais, Eurotunnel, Dieppe, Le Havre, Caen, Cherbourg, St Malo and Santander. Just missing Roscoff and Bilbao.

    Least disappointing new Rolling Stock?

With tongue in cheek (a bit!) to a lot of rail enthusiasts, everything will be a disappointment if it doesn't have seats stuffed with horse hair, incandescent light bulbs and mahogany walls, and be at least 10 carriages long, hauled by a steam loco.

Close 10% of rail lines and lose only 1% of passengers, reinvest savings to generate 10% more passengers…

Same applies on the Isle of Wight. If you've ever sat on a bus all the way from Ryde to Shanklin, you'll appreciate why the railway is still there, even with its awkward timetable. Some sort of light rail may be appropriate, but certainly closure would be deeply unpopular.

Introduction of European Entry-Exit Scheme (EES)

My experience last week as a car driver: Newhaven to Dieppe, nothing, just swipe & stamp, out in 5 mins as I'd paid the 20 quid for priority disembarkation. No sign of any infrastructure. Calais to Dover, the same utter chaos as normal but still swipe & stamp. Noticed some new booth structures...

Southeastern: potential stopgap to cover ageing Networkers

The above is from the Southeastern stock replacement thread. Is this a realistic option? In the new world of GBR, a bit of joined up thinking could produce the following: Reinstate from store the 350/2s onto the London North Western services (reseat if necessary), and then cascade the DC...

SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

I think the general assumption is that anyone wishing to travel from Reading all the way to London will spend 25 mins on an IET to Paddington.

    Current or future fuel issues

As none of our oil comes from the Gulf, then supply won't be a problem for the UK. It's the cost that will become an issue.

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

One of the DTO's of 455702 has arrived by road at Basingstoke ROC. What they plan to do with it I have no idea. Source: photo on Facebook, from a very reliable source

SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

The 458/5s are off lease, so they are not SWR's to steal parts from.

    "TSB radio"?

I'm probably showing my age. In the 1980s there was an extensive TV ad campaign for TSB Bank with a real earworm jingle. "TSB, the bank that likes to say Yes"

    "TSB radio"?

It's the radio that likes to say "yes". I'll get my coat.

    Withdrawn Class 153 locations

    Just trying to update my records, I have withdrawn 153s as being in the following locations: Ely: 153301, 153304, 153315, 153319, 153351, 153355, 153357, 153381 Landore: 153320, 153333, 153367, 153369, 153909, 153910, 153921, 153922, 153926, 153935 Long Marston: 153330, 153332, 153356...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Trying to work this out: Have we now reached a point where sufficient amounts of trained drivers are the limiting factor with regards to further diagram introduction, rather than available units? It's not as acute a problem as before though, as all units planned to be off leased are now off...

Trivia: services scheduled to skip the most stations

Does that include stations on the other side? Frethun, Lille Europe, TGV Haute Picardie and a handful of suburban Parisian ones.

    The Middle East conflict

With the reduced payload required to send it that distance, that's a pretty good description.

    The Middle East conflict

Just to point out that it'd have to cross a lot of heavily guarded airspace before it reached the UK. A straight line from the westernmost part of Iran to the UK goes over the Eastern flank of NATO, namely Romania and Poland, which is very much set up for air defence (albeit with Russia in mind)...

Trivia: services scheduled to skip the most stations

Then peak hour Weymouth trains from Waterloo are first stop Basingstoke, that's 20 stations skipped (or 21 if you count Queenstown Road)

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

How many of the early builds had to go back for cab mods? Would this effectively put them at the back of the introduction queue?

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

I'd guess it was put on in the middle of the day rather than the peak, as very few if any would be travelling first class. Even in the 1990s, the Veps on that route carted around empty first class compartments between the peaks. 1774094200 I await the 458/4 withdrawal thread!
