    Salisbury-Paddington open return

I need to get to Paddington from Salisbury tomorrow off peak, and back the day after, evening peak. I don't fancy sweating it out on the Bakerloo line, the only routes that National Rail is offering me are London Terminals direct assuming onwards via Bakerloo, and via Westbury which won't...

SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

Are we reaching a point with so few diagrams left that some drivers & guards competencies will expire?

Fail to stop at High Wycombe (30/06)

Not necessarily the fault of the driver. I was on a "Fail To Call" at Twyford a few years back. It was one of the few HSTs that was scheduled to call, turns out the driver had been given a diagram with a typo.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Going by a quick skim of RTT, all Sheppertons and Kingston rounders are 701, and all but a very small amount of Hampton Courts, Dorking and Chessingtons. The real mixture of 450s and 701s is on the Guildford new line and Woking stoppers. Back in the slammer era, the Guildford via Woking (as was)...

Apology issued over incorrectly issued parking fines at Bedford station (19/06)

Meanwhile, all the car drivers who dutifully stayed away from Bedford Station as requested by the police to allow for investigation and recovery work, including those who may have been onboard one of the trains, have been rewarded with penalty charge notices by the council. Yes they are being...

Who pays for the cost of recovery, in the event of a crash?

I'm fairly certain that all parties who are involved with the railways have various levels of public liability insurance.

Will the 810 involved in the Bedford crash be repaired or partly replaced?

Could well end up at the RAIB secure site at Farnborough Airport. Wherever it is, I'm certain that it'll be in the middle of the night with covers on.

What is the safest position to sit on a train ?

What is notable from the images I've seen is that all the side windows on both units remained intact. This will have certainly prevented many more potential injuries from flying glass. Therefore I don't think window or aisle has much in it these days for the safest place to sit.

Report of collision Bedford (Elstow) - 19/06/26

Seconded. There were at one point over 900 "guests" reading the forum, many of those will have been journalists trawling for info, which is why speculation needed to be kept off the thread.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

The cynic in me is grateful that there are no 5 car 701s in service so far, it means that nothing on the suburban side can be short formed.

    Varamis Rail Class 321s & 325s”

It must be costing somebody something to keep them there, so eventually they'll have to be moved once NR stop being paid. Is there precedent for NR to demand that a piece of roling stock is removed from their property?

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

I asked the question a few pages back about whether the /0s alone would be enough to see off the 458/4s, and was given an unequivocal yes. Therefore the /5s would only be for service enhancements and to remove the 450s from their remaining suburban diagrams. I suspect that there is no immediate...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

My Esso fuel card is still magstripe, as is my Nectar card (but that also has a barcode for zapping). However Tesco have come kicking and screaming into the 21st century, the latest Clubcard is contactless. I still remember the back and forth manual machines for credit cards, which took an...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Are the /0s going to be sufficient to see off all the 458/4s? I presume the /5s will then be used to remove any remaining 450s from suburban/Windsor side work.

Great British Railways - First Train in New Livery

Here's an "out there" thought: they could have a brand for long distance, one for south east commuters, and one for all other shorter distance routes. They could be called "Intercity", "Network SouthEast" and "Regional Railways", each with their own livery and brand identity. Oh wait.......

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Is there any conversion training currently underway for the /5s, or is this still yet to commence?

SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

Bournemouth held the lion's share of the unused 442s for a while, so I guess there is still a bit of space.

People obtaining railway keys and breaking into cabs

It really is unbelievable that all recent rolling stock doesn't have a proximity card access system. We have them at work (NHS) for multiple doors. As well as restricting access, the system records whose card has been used and when, and if a card is lost or when a staff member leaves, it can be...

    18/6/2026 by-elections - including Makerfield

I can't think of another by election where this has happened. The closest is the general election where a nice safe seat was found for Boris Johnson to re enter Parliament, with his designs on No 10 being the worst kept secret ever.

Great British Railways - First Train in New Livery

I wonder what the first BR era train to be repainted will be? As it's been clearly stated that repainting will only take place when it would have been done anyway in the maintenance cycle, my bet is on the SWR 159/1s.
