Great British Railways - First Train in New Livery

The GBR Anglia website is a mess. what are they actually called? It's still Greater Anglia branded, but everything else refers to GBR Anglia.

SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

It kind of makes sense if they want to use some 450s for strengthening from the get-go, and then phase out the 458s as progress is made with the 701/5s. It's not like anyone else is waiting for the 458s.

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

Probably not. They would have been a much better stopgap on SWR metro work than the half dozen or so 458/4s remaining, but I'm aware of the history, and hindsight is a wonderful thing.

"X for Y" - stations that should perhaps have another name added to them but don't have at present

Ashurst for Lyndhurst? Or even change its name back to Lyndhurst Road.

Paddington-Reading blocked due to OLE isolation and lineside fire (5/9)

Looks like you arrived 192 minutes late. I think the dubious honour of the biggest delay goes to 1A84 from Penzance, 225 minutes late into Pad.

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

I service my vacuum cleaner twice a year. Full dismantle, clean and if necessary small parts replacement. Most people just look at me strangely when I tell them I do it. Same with my PC. Twice yearly take apart and clean out.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

SWT used to run 9 car 444/450 combinations, so it's possible there could be a return to that.

Products and services where the new version is not as good or has significant disadvantages as the old

Creosote. Yes I know why you can't buy it any more, but modern wood preservers just don't do the job as well.

    Taxing road users by mile

You can't rapid charge a PHEV (well certainly not mine), it takes 5 hours for a full charge up to 30 miles. Therefore multiple short journeys entirely on electric are not practical. Add to that, it decides for various reasons only known to itself to sometimes let the petrol engine cut in when...

Should children be taught how to use public transport at school?

Before the days of formal PSHE teaching, we had a teacher when I was about 12 who went out of his way to explain how adult life worked. He covered finances, including tax, pensions, mortgages. Also, I think ahead of his times as this was the late 1980s, how not to get scammed, and how to be...

SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

Thing is, the 455s were headed for scrap, so the farewell tour really was towards rhe end of their life. There is still the possibility at this stage that they could go somewhere else.

    Taxing road users by mile

My PHEV has a range of 30 miles. That's about a tenth of the range of a full EV. So why should I pay half the rate of an EV, should it not be a tenth? How can the government determine how much distance I cover on full electric vs hybrid mode or self charging mode? Additionally, about 20% of my...

SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

Which I guess is why they are being stored at SWR facilities. The early termination of the lease will probably cost the same as paying the remainder of the lease (same as coming out of a phone contract early), so at least storing on their own turf won't incur charges whilst not paying for...

    Reform UK discussion

And that is a great summary. First it was the EU. We left that, and nothing good has come of it, so now they move onto 'immigrants". Nobody is arguing that illegal crossings are a good thing. I would like to see them end, and the gangs behind them dismantled. Nobody is arguing that high streets...

    Reform UK discussion

To rehash something that's often said: In the UK we don't vote for a Prime Minister. We never have done. We vote for a local MP, and the party with the largest number of MPs gets the right to choose a PM. It annoys me every time there's whining about a general election when there's a change of...

    BBC - are they worried?!

There is a subset of people, both on the left and the right, that get all hot under the collar when the BBC doesn't agree with their extreme points of view, and start shouting bias.

    Made up excuses for lateness

Escaped Puma, Chessington North. 22 minutes late.

    BBC - are they worried?!

The licence fee is flawed, but at the moment I can't think of a better alternative. Adding to general taxation would be hugely unpopular, as would an Internet tax to fund it. Subscription is a non starter, the whole point of public service broadcasting is that it's the home of stuff that isn't...

Severe Alert from the UK Government

I live within 6 miles of the New Forest fire. The perma-thick are still having BBQs and camp fires despite many local media warnings, signs etc, two BBQs in the open have caused additional fires this week. I think the sledgehammer approach was needed to focus some minds.

"Sorry for any inconvenience caused". The most overused phrase

Didn't want to clog up any of the rail disruption threads with this. Am I alone in really hating the phrase 'sorry for any inconvenience caused"? I find it utterly meaningless filler-speak when an organisation is compelled to say something to its customers/users. It seems to be a catch all...
