SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

There is no mystery. There is a maintenance backlog as described in the 701 thread, and also units stuck the wrong side of the Clapham Yard derailment.

    Natural phenomenon you have witnessed?

Are we all ready for the eclipse? I fundamentally won't trust any eclipse glasses bought online, so I'll be pinhole projecting the sun onto white card. There are various social media posts claiming that you can use a welding mask to view the sun. This is untrue, and an unsafe thing to do.

    USB tethering question

The landline based Internet isn't worth having. Half the village has fibre, but not us, due to "difficulties". I'm using an all you can eat data French SIM from free.fr, so no worries about allowances. I won't on principal due to Musk's involvement Interesting thought. The only reason I...

    USB tethering question

A little background: I have a share in a second home in France, and the Internet connection is woeful (about 256k on a good day) However we are fortunate enough to have a stonkingly good 5g signal on one side of the house. I am currently hotspotting from my phone, but the WiFi signal is...

Great British Railways - First Train in New Livery

Wasn't it said a while ago that individual operating units of DfTO had to earn the right to use the GBR name and livery? Has that been quietly forgotten? On a slightly different subject, there is a big electronic poster ad for GBR at Tiverton Services on the M5 at the moment (next to Tiverton...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

It'll probably end up like the 455 rundown. No booked work for several weeks, but dragged out on an ad hoc basis to cover shortfalls.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Do you include Woking bay stoppers as suburban? So we have now reached the point where the 458 fleet is being retired, and there are no 450s on the suburban side. I presume the 701/5s once introduced will see off the 450s from the Windsor & Reading side. Are there that many mainline 450 run...

    Potential Greater Anglia branding options

Sounds.like the names of ITV regions. Actually that may work, we could have Central, Granada, TVS and Tyne Tees amongst others.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

If I'm correct, I think this means that the only non 701 services on the mainline suburban side are a handful of Woking bay stoppers and Guildford via Cobhams. Pretty much the situation we had back in the day with 455s and VEPs.

Severn Valley Railway to trial commuter services

I seem to remember the Mid Hants experimenting with something similar, using a Parry People Mover from Four Marks to Alton. Not sure if any services ever ran.

    Tactiles Melting?

Funnily enough I noticed this last week at Basingstoke (I think). Looking very rumpled.

TfW class 398 Stadler Citylink tram trains

As with most things, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. However certain claims being made border on the unbelievable. We all know that the rail unions, quite rightly, will vociferously call out anything that their members are being asked to do that isn't right, yet we hear nothing...

    SWR DMU issues

I'd agree with you there. I don't often travel to London, but it's two trips in two weeks for me. This week, aside from the aforementioned aircon issues, in the Londonbound direction from Salisbury on the journey in, we got terminated at Basingstoke, with the onward connection to London full &...

    SWR DMU issues

A very unpleasant journey today on a 159 with no functioning aircon. The other unit in the consist was the same. The fact is the ventilation systems are 35 years old, I can't think of any other application where aircon would be expected to soldier on this long. As there is no replacement for...

Heat related disruption 8 July 2026 onwards

I suppose it's weather related, there is a tree down on the SWML between Brookwood and Farnborough, taking out the down slow. Down fast is running with a speed restriction. The tree has embedded itself under the juice rail and there is no evidence of anyone on site to remove it, so this could...

    Reform UK discussion

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjdg4y3g0z7o None of the major parties are standing, according to the BBC News channel. So it needs a Martyn Bell type of candidate, or Count Binface it is.

SWR Class 458/4s: fleet status and withdrawal updates

Still two 458/5s to move off to Long Marston as well. That'll free up space for 2x 701/5s

    Reform UK discussion

There should be no other candidates fielded except Count Binface. It would be a pretty limited mandate to say you beat a candidate with a bin on his head.

    Salisbury-Paddington open return

Thanks. I think that answers it. Couldn't get the maps to load properly on a phone. Quite why anyone would do Reading to Waterloo is a mystery. Sounds like a plan.

    Salisbury-Paddington open return

The journey itself can be done with a super off peak open return (I think). Are there any restrictions on this in the evening peak ex Waterloo or Paddington?
