Pretty sure that is the 456 green to red conversion course trip. Usually 2x45 but perhaps a 10 car for testing/training purposes. It would have sat at Guildford for a while

I believe that I saw a 10 car formation - 455+455+456 going into Wimbledon Park depot at about 1415 today. Can anyone confirm this did happen. I also assume that it was on a test run

Looks like this one! http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W95987/2015/03/24/advanced

It's been posted before that there's a break even point around 3 coaches, below which it is cheaper to use road.

Of course many complete units are moved about under their own power by rail, but you have to take into account they are usually AC or Dual voltage EMUs; or DMUs. A 456 would have to be hauled by a loco away from the DC area so you'd need various translator vehicles as well.

That's all well and good but you should have seen the traffic chaos it caused. In effect it reduced the A3 in the rush hour to 1 lane. Goodness knows what happend when it got on to the local roads in Wimbledon. Just sums up the crazy world of the privitised railway that a train (that is in main line use not withdrawn etc) is cheaper/more convient to move by road then by rail, what a scandal.

6020 on the way up, or should be. Was split on the loading road at the Park.

6004 should come the other way by the end of the week all being good

456+455 working the 17.13 Waterloo to Waterloo via Richmond and Kingston this afternoon. First time I've seen one on the Windsor side.

There's always been one booked 456 run on the Windsor side; 0745 Clapham Junction-Guildford: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W93181/2015/04/29/advanced

The new 455+455+456 diagrams include a couple of trips around the Kingston Loop in the evening.

You're right, I see it every morning! I suppose I meant a red one.

I know this has probably been covered before but can a 10 car 455/456 combo call at Isleworth/ Hampton Wick/ Hounslow/ Feltham etc without leaving the 456 off the platform and leaving people potentially trapped in the wrong part of the train?

Easy to identity the diagrams too with 455+455+456 too with their class 9 reporting codes.

No. 455s/456s don't have SDO so 10-car formations won't be calling at the stations you list.

Hampton Wick is fine for 10 cars, but it can't call at the others without the rear unit being locked out of use.

Stations that can't fit 10 cars so a 455+455+456 cannot call without units locked out:
Syon Lane
Isleworth
Hounslow
Feltham
Wraysbury
Sunnymeads
Datchet
Egham
Virginia Water (P3, from the Chertsey direction towards Staines, only fits 5 cars)
Chertsey (cannot fit more than 4 cars in both directions)
Addlestone

That is an excellent find :D must be to ensure they don't accidentally get put in P1-4?

Using Realtimetrains, these are the workings but I can't quite match up the second one during the day

3F82 0520 Guildford Down Sidings to Woking 0541
9F82 0543 Woking to London Waterloo 0620
9F07 0650 London Waterloo to Guildford 0747
9G92 0807 Guildford to London Waterloo 0859
3Y23 0926 London Waterloo to Clapham Yard Sidings 0957
3O03 1257 Clapham Yard Sidings to Strawberry Hill C.S.D. 1331
3K51 1657 Strawberry Hill C.S.D. to London Waterloo 1742
9K51 1757 London Waterloo to London Waterloo 1916
9O59 1933 London Waterloo to London Waterloo 2049
3Y63 2102 London Waterloo to Wimbledon Park Depot Sdgs 2121

3G05 0535 Wimbledon Park Depot Sdgs to London Waterloo 0554
9G05 0603 London Waterloo to Guildford 0703
9G90 0716 Guildford to London Waterloo 0811
3Y81 0821 London Waterloo to Wimbledon Park Depot Sdgs 0906

???

3O96 1654 Clapham Yard to London Waterloo 1705
9O96 1713 London Waterloo to London Waterloo 1829
9G91 1848 London Waterloo to Guildford 1941
3G91 2011 Guildford to Guildford Down Sidings 2013

Does this mean a reduction in the number of 455+456+456 workings? I think there were four of these diagrams - ie 8 456s out before.

There are now 10 so that's the 8 plus the two you need for the two ten car diagrams at the moment
6002/3/6/10/12/14/15/17/18/24 red out on the road, 6004 can't be too far off as it arrived last week. I heard 6005 should be going up so normally one comes down to balance. In theory that should be 6019. The 11th unit should see a third ten car out in the morning according to my mate

Thought I was going to work my first 456 in passenger service yesterday but the diagram was altered to 455's only.Missed out again.

To think years ago Class 9 was unfitted freight trains.I suppose giving it that rating makes the signalmans job simpler.

Oh yeah saw half (green) on low loader, then gone.Other half I take it left in yard (visible).Green 456011 visible from main line then coupled to another later on.Didn't get number of second unit and a few reds floating about with respective 455 sets accompanying in 10 car formation.455+455+456.

My usual 0807 from Guildford is now 10 coaches. On Monday the 456 was on the front, today it was on the rear. Causes a certain amount of confusion at Surbiton where the 10 car boards are at the London end of the platform, so the rear of the 10 stop is displaced 2 coaches up the platform from where an 8 car would stop and passengers have to walk forward from where they habitually stand.

I had 456017+456002+5741 on the 1916 Waterloo to Chessington South, which I took as far as Raynes Park. I sat above the motors in 6017 and they weren't behaving. Leaving Waterloo, Vauxhall and Clapham Junction they worked on pullaway, but then kept cutting out and coming back a couple of times and then remained out. Improved to just one cut out and remaining working when leaving Earlsfield and Wimbledon. When I got off at Raynes Park and watched+listened to it pull away, I found the motors in 6002 were dead. It lost a couple of minutes time as well.

No defects for traction faults at all this week on any of the three.

Probably better two 455s towing (or pushing) a 456.
