This is the one?Pretty sure that is the 456 green to red conversion course trip. Usually 2x45 but perhaps a 10 car for testing/training purposes. It would have sat at Guildford for a while
I believe that I saw a 10 car formation - 455+455+456 going into Wimbledon Park depot at about 1415 today. Can anyone confirm this did happen. I also assume that it was on a test run
It's been posted before that there's a break even point around 3 coaches, below which it is cheaper to use road.
Of course many complete units are moved about under their own power by rail, but you have to take into account they are usually AC or Dual voltage EMUs; or DMUs. A 456 would have to be hauled by a loco away from the DC area so you'd need various translator vehicles as well.

2x45?
I'd love to see that.![]()
They look great in red.![]()
Finally got my first rides on a set yesterday, I loved them. Very nice conversion job and that 'new train' smell. SWT should bottle it![]()
There's always been one booked 456 run on the Windsor side; 0745 Clapham Junction-Guildford: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W93181/2015/04/29/advanced
The new 455+455+456 diagrams include a couple of trips around the Kingston Loop in the evening.
You're right, I see it every morning! I suppose I meant a red one.
I know this has probably been covered before but can a 10 car 455/456 combo call at Isleworth/ Hampton Wick/ Hounslow/ Feltham etc without leaving the 456 off the platform and leaving people potentially trapped in the wrong part of the train?
Hampton Wick is fine for 10 cars, but it can't call at the others without the rear unit being locked out of use. You're right, I see it every morning! I suppose I meant a red one.

Easy to identity the diagrams too with 455+455+456 too with their class 9 reporting codes.
Using Realtimetrains, these are the workings but I can't quite match up the second one during the day

Does this mean a reduction in the number of 455+456+456 workings? I think there were four of these diagrams - ie 8 456s out before.
6004 was out on one of the 10-car diagrams yesterday. There are now 10 so that's the 8 plus the two you need for the two ten car diagrams at the moment
6002/3/6/10/12/14/15/17/18/24 red out on the road, 6004 can't be too far off as it arrived last week.

I had 456017+456002+5741 on the 1916 Waterloo to Chessington South, which I took as far as Raynes Park. I sat above the motors in 6017 and they weren't behaving. Leaving Waterloo, Vauxhall and Clapham Junction they worked on pullaway, but then kept cutting out and coming back a couple of times and then remained out. Improved to just one cut out and remaining working when leaving Earlsfield and Wimbledon. When I got off at Raynes Park and watched+listened to it pull away, I found the motors in 6002 were dead. It lost a couple of minutes time as well.
