Saw a 4 car 456 waiting to come out of Wimbledon depot today at about 1210pm.Looked like 456003 + 4560?? but don't know where they were going.

There is currently an ECS red 456 path in the WTT as far as May. Runs Wimbledon Depot-Guildford via Cobham and return. I presume this is for crew training. Runs as a pair of red 456s.

Have the red 456s done any work on the Windsor Lines or to Kingston/Shepperton yet?

Initial driver training was in the Shepperton area wasn't it, but not red ones? Given the various posts showing passenger diagrams it doesn't seem likely they've been to Windsor though.

As they're now running one set round all day it's possible they've reached Kingston. I have seen a breakdown of the services provided by that set.

That's right,I trained on the green ones down the sheppy road.

There was almost permanently a pair of green ones at Strawberry Hill for the last year or so, but they've disappeared recently, as have the short term paths between Kingston and Shepperton, so presumably the driver/guard training on 456s is complete, and some stabling space has been freed up elsewhere.

I'm assuming that the green ones are still doing the morning Clapham to Guildford via Richmond and Ascot service, but I've yet to see any reports of red ones to Shepperton or round to the Windsor lines.

Because they're not route cleared for those line yet. Besides I'm sure that WD would like them back in one piece, not thousands courtesy of the S.C.R.O.A.T that live on those lines.

And there was a solitary pair out this morning (not attached to a 455), didn't see the numbers though, busy concentrating on the job.

I think that's part of the regular all-day diagram. A 456-456-455 now regularly goes through Worcester Park (behind my house) at about the right time. (I didn't personally see it yesterday as I wasn't home in time.)

Thanks,I really don't know what's going on with these as we have very few diagrams, looks like we've got the 459's to keep us busy.

After a couple of incident prone days (which saw me travelling at odd times) in the am, I saw 456+456+455 stabled outside WAT jsut before 08:50 this morning. Still haven't managed to actually travel on a refurbished 456 yet, but seen plenty around.

I know we have fed in information as they have come into traffic, but has anyone got a neat re-cap of planned use - I note the all day diagram mentioned above.

Thanks,

EAD

Saw 456006 on Plat 2 at Waterloo about half 7 I think it was,or something like that.If you don't look at the cabs the coaches look just like a 455 coach.IMHO.Dunno what the rest of the train was. Also saw a set coming out of Dorking beforehand.

Noticed both WAT sidings had 456s in today - set nearest Down Slow had 2x 456 and a 455. Could not see formation on the far siding, but certainly a 456 on the up end of the train in there. Was about 08:50 again.

Living in those parts I'll try not to take offence! But when you say route cleared what exactly do you mean? Not approved by SWT for use on service trains in their Red form? Because the Green ones have been in use for driver/guard training between Shepperton-Kingston/Twickenham, and see use in service Clapham Junction to Ascot each weekday?

I didn't mean to cause offence, but those lines have a very bad reputation for vandalism, harassment & intimidation etc, so perhaps you might understand why I said it.

Apparently due to the nature of the refurbishment, the red one's have to be reassessed or something before they can run over those lines.

What I find odd is that 456's are just ½ a 455, yet when it comes to platforms 4, 6/7 at Guildford they are restricted to 15 mph in & out, yet a 455 can go in & out normally! :-? Weird or what!

I have list of differing restrictions (obviously I can't publish those) and every so often they update the updates! So it's a case of keeping your wits about you with the differing colours.

Isn't the gauging reassessment needed because the maximum crush load affects the suspension characteristics, so they can lean over slightly more on curves and stuff.

I think it was in one the rail mags so may be completely made up though... :)

Just had a look at some photos I did and it seems that they have to have their safety validation redone once they have been refurbished. Seems odd, but that article may well be right.

That's a normal working.Ends up in Wimbledon Depot.

No idea. Staines and a few others on curves were to do with overhang on the front, as the front end is different, but some have been lifted.

Saw a green 456 on the wheel lathe at Northam today, didn't get a number, but it was coupled to a 455.

Presumably although it's been said they aren't compatible in passenger service, the combination is OK for ECS.

There have been a couple of ECS movements with 455s and green 456s. AFAIK the problem preventing regular coupling is the Call for Aid system. The Call for Aid isn't going to be used on ECS moves so they can run.

Which reminds me, I don't think I've ever seen a single 455 (or 456 now) running down here in the Southampton area on its own. Do they always send a pair of units, eg to Bournemouth for the current work packages, as a precaution against one being stranded with no ability to couple to anything?

One unit is usually to/from works one is insurance for trips to Bournemouth or back. Southern sent theirs to Eastleigh solo. One had a camshaft lock up on its way to Eastleigh at Staines causing a nightmare. And one had a MA blow up on the way back from Eastleigh again blocking the line.
