317s work every day at the moment. Since the first 720’s introduction, there has not yet been a day (excluding engineering works) where a pair hasn’t been out.
However last weekend just gone it did change because a few diagrams have become 720s with the recent moves of the 317s to ely in the last fortnight.
Ie Saturday 09th April only 317506 and 317510 was on Stansted with none out on the Sunday. Due to engineering works and a massive blockade taking place this weekend. Quite possible no 317s are out.

Seems unlikely to see any at the London end this weekend with services from Liverpool Street only going as far as Cheshunt and services from Stratford to Meridian Water. Today saw six single 720s on a quarter hourly Cheshunt shuttle and two single 720s on a half hourly Meridian Water shuttle.

There were only a small number of pairs on Cambridge North to Stansted services today, so most likely little (if any) on the London end.

Very interesting working this morning 317337/347/502 worked the 07:43 Witham - Liv St (possible last passenger working on the GEML?). Presumably worked by Ilford driver and due to the fact that the WAML had been closed most of the weekend for engineering works!

Yes, an Ilford driver. Rather inefficient as their turn consists entirely of taking the set off Ilford depot, taking it ECS to Witham, running to Liverpool Street, and then back to Ilford ECS!

Must be the only current triple 317 working as well

Will the 317s last beyond the may timetable? Because I have heard and have been told by a couple off Anglia drivers that some might possibly stay beyond may for a short while due to ongoing issues with 720s. Like the one on the 720 thread ie 720526 which got sent back to derby due to issues with it.
However could it be possible they remain but as standby vice 720s ie out some days not others ie as a reserve but no booked workings. Currently at present there is 3 booked diagrams. With and including monday to fridays additional to this also usually you get x2 vice 317 vice 720 diagrams extra. With occasionally some days just the one 317 vice 720. Whilst on other days occasionally up to x3 317 extra diagrams vice 720 also. It can vary from weekday to weekday though in the main its 5 diagrams 10 units. But you can get as little as 8 or as high as 12 out in public service .

I think it’s fair to say in the current circumstances many diagrams are not that efficient, what with COVID and an ever changing fleet plan something’s got to give!

Reported elsewhere that there are no booked diagrams in the new May timetable. Whether they will have short term diagrams from week to week, or whether control will simply put them out on any class 720 diagram remains to be seen.

It's interesting to compare the level of enthusiast interest between the largely similar class 317s and class 455s. There are hundreds of photos being posted of Southern 455s but hardly anyone seems interested in the 317s which could well disappear at the same time without any fanfare. Personally I find the Southern 455s rather tedious. They are driven quite cautiously on routes with stations very close together. By contrast the 317s get hammered. Even on the stoppers to Hertford East they get up to a decent speed between stations.

I've been out and about on the 317s a bit - the fast non-stop BXB-LST trains are good fun. Got video and photos which I'll put together and upload somewhere. I've also been out on the 455s but finding them on fast services is getting difficult!

Although from memory there are a couple of those non-stop trains to avoid as they followed a stopper so are very slow.

Liverpool Street will look very different when the 317s are gone, just the remaining 321s from the GA "Old Guard" on the Eastern side [and the remaining few 315s for TfL Rail].

They depart from Broxbourne 10 minutes behind the up Hertford train so they tend to catch up at Tottenham Hale.

Active today are the following
317347 with 317504
317881 with 317337
317501 with 317506 all on off peak Cambridge North to London Liverpool Street.
317340 ecs Bishops Stortford to London? Was in sidings earlier now gone.
317502 and 317339 on Bishops Stortford to Stratford off peak.
At momment only appears to be 8 out.
Compared to Monday and Tuesday in which 13 was out and Yesterday Tuesday 11 was out. Maybe a 720 has entered into service?

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

317340 has just returned ecs empties back to Bishops stortford sidings from London Liverpool Street

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Also 317511 and 317343 are active on the Hertford East to London Liverpool Street of peak services as well.

Today what wasn't so great was a abeillo Anglia train driver objecting and becoming a bit aggressive to a elderly gent taking a photo and filming the train. Shouting at him angry saying he had no rights to do this and he couldn't film but could only film well away and part down the train causing some upset. Not professional and quite disappointing and distressing to see. Hopefully incidents like this don't occur reqular.
Certainly a driver with a bit of a issue.
Unlike most others who are a amazing credit to their role. I have in the past on the 317 came across this myself in the past. However sadly its still around today. Just hoping this isn't is the issue for enthusiasts to miss the final 317 days. Because in the main last couple or so days I have travelled it is the elderly generation that are enjoying the final rides on these. Most likely especially as these replaced the locomotive hauled services in the late eighties when they themselves was probably early to mid twenties etc.

I must say I'm surprised about this. I've always found the drivers very friendly and I've chatted with a few of them in recent months. One driver happened to hop out of the cab to check the headlights as I was taking a photo and she apologised for getting in the way!

Also 317502+317339 on 1112 LST-HFE. I did a round trip on that pair. I think 317337+317881 were on 1128 LST-CMB.

Yes they are best me to it.
However same units all week.
Monday 25 th April 2022 saw 317510 with 317886. However took out of service Tuesday due to a fault also when travelling Monday despite a fault that pair kept running despite receiving fitters treatment all day long.
Just got these now. Nice driver tells me some are staying till July.
Like this week 720 failure more than 317. However no diagrams but will appear on different services on stp diagrams short term planning .
Week to week for a short spell.
But on saying that it is the same now with up to 3 extra stp 317 diagrams as it is.

Indeed, the departure from Liverpool Street towards Tottenham Hale on a 317 with noisy traction motors involves much more change of sound than any 455 exit from Victoria or London Bridge, although the /6s were better than the remaining units.

During the past two days or so again this week whilst travelling the 317s. Apart from the very odd one or two enthusiasts and that is the odd one.
Most of the time and all week in the main I was really the only one showing any interest in them. Don't forget the last booked workings finish in two weeks time. Abeillo Anglia are not doing a farewell tour for this class. Let us not forget the 455 class still will be around most likely for a year or so. They still remain and aren't finished. Don't understand the mad panic for a 455 on Southern. Over a class 317 about to end without a farewell tour. Don't forget the 317s have some nostalgia to being known as bed pans ie Bedford pans from the Bedford line the first class to do passenger, parcels and first class and also on network southeast the first class of such to do the revamp of services as well long distance services.
Sadly the class is very soon to be no more in service. Such a shame to see it go without not much interest either.
455 still remains. 317 will not remain.

Sunday sadly none due to Engineers works going on. However should be a few around on Monday though notably on Cambridge north and Hertford east and daytime Stratford to Bishops stortford. Around 4 to 5 diagrams.
However if can do Monday ask again on here and find out which are on.
Almost a guarantee if fact for certain some will remain this week. Most certainly on Monday and the rest. Not enough 720 out this week before May timetable change.
