Good morning, does anyone know if there are any 317s out today?

Thank you, I assume they are all at the other end like times above, so will wait around a bit, thanks for the speedy reply!
See post #72. Apart from the trains shown as worked by 317340, all the other services listed are usually class 317s.

Thanks a lot, from seeing them go past that’s correct, thanks again!
No worries. There are four booked pairs plus the diagram that starts 0729 Ely to LST is usually 317s instead of the booked class 720. Yesterday they swapped out the 317s for a 720 on the 1258 down. However, another 720 needed replacing mid afternoon so 317501+508 came back out to play and finished in Cambridge again. Back to square one!

This week Monday 23 May 2022 onwards has despite for a short spell from Tuesday 17th May 2022 to Friday 20th May 2022 of only 4 pairs and 8 317s out. Seen the 317s back up to 5 diagrams and 10 out each day.
With Monday enjoying 11 out one also working solo as well. Good to see them increase again and 720s being unavailable. However they do appear to be mainly on the Hertford East to London Liverpool Street services.
Including a peak hours diagramm.
Also on the Bishops Stortford to Stratford services. With just one remaining on the Cambridge circuit. On the whole. However from May timetable change these workings will vary.
Because they do change from day to day due to being on standby and have no set diagrams.

“Good to see 720s being unavailable”
Really? You won’t be saying that when the old trains aren’t there anymore.

I don't have much interest in them.
Horrible seating. Sadly my generation of trains is eroding away. Ie 800s 700s 195 331 720 196 are not for me I am more the Good old br era to around 2016.
However a 720 is good if it has a decent locomotive dragging it ie class 56 or 37 now that is what a class 720 should be used for. However still good to see a extension of 317 though.

It won't bother me. I won't be there any more either!

On Tuesday 317339+317506 were on Stansted Express. The peak time runs are wedged full with Harlow and Stortford commuters. It will be interesting to see what is the back up when the 317s are gone. A single 720 would be grim.

Just seen what I believe to be 2x 317s on a scrap move to Newport at Ealing Broadway.

Does anyone happen to know when the next scrap run will be?

It was Great Anglia ones.
Reported as being 317342+317515.

Today there were just the three booked pairs in service. I think this is the first time that none have been out covering class 720 diagrams. 317504+317347 spare at Cambridge.

Today Monday 30th May 2022. Is only 3 pairs of 317s out ie 6 units. One pair on the Hertford East. One pair on the Stratford to Bishops Stortford and One pair of peak Cambridge. 317511 317337 317340 317339 being Four in service in which had a quick ride on Tottenham Hale to Broxbourne. Also worth noting that on Saturday 28th May 2022.
First time ever no 317s out. Recently Saturdays since beginning April always saw al least one out On the Stansted.
However once again no interest really at all for 317s. Despite stations on the West London line having hoards of enthusiasts for the 455 scrap move.
Sadly the time will be hear in the next 4 weeks or so and 317 will be no more.
Unlike 455 which still survive.
Still don't understand why 317s little interest. Southern 455 and Swr you would think that only are 455 Swr going to end like tommorow so is the world.
317s are also just as unique as the 455 as being the first local commuter/long commuter distance type of unit to work on NSE ie network southeast to places such as Birmingham Ely Cambridge Peterborough. Etc. Also be aware that no farewell tour has been mentioned or planned for this class type either nor does abeillo Anglia with it's way of doing things will do one. Get them in before it's to late.

Mad isn't it. Publish an end date and the world and its dog points a camera. The 317s are basically 455s but have toilets, go faster, have louder motors and are driven much more enthusiastically. Yet they will fade away and hardly anyone will notice. On a note of trivia, I think they have worked out of more London termini than any other straight AC EMU, namely St Pancras, Moorgate, Euston, King's Cross, Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street. I managed to have 317342 out of four of them.

Apparently 317s could stay to August as Stansted is expected to be busier during the commonwealth games

How does that work with 745s working Stansted services? Is the point that a pair of 317s is the only thing with capacity to replace a missing 745?

I’ve seen a number of 317s on Stansted Express services recently, presumably to cover with faults on the 745s.

Yes, but the question I guess I have is that a pair of 317s would be on standby to replace a 745 rather than a single 720 (or pair).

To my knowledge, a 720 has not yet replaced a 745 on a Stansted diagram. Presumably there are none spare, otherwise there would not be 317s on 720 diagrams. That will change in a few weeks once the last 317 diagrams are gone. It's worth noting that peak time Stansteds are now rammed with Harlow and Bishop's Stortford commuters. A pair of 317s only just copes so I'd expect a single 720 would leave people behind at Tottenham Hale.

I don't think so. Stansted has very few flights to/from Commonwealth countries. Most Stansted flights are to/from European countries that are not in the Commonwealth.

Probably extra trains being run to come with the extra demand
Unlikely - the use of 317s being referred to here appears to be where 745s fail.

Greater Anglia don't have enough 745 reliability to run the full Norwich and Stansted Airport services as timetabled before March 2020. Keeping 317s to be able to run more services doesn't seem obvious though.

Sounds correct to me and shows what a versatile unit they've been with quite a few interior permutations as well. Given they were BR's first MkIII based AC EMU you would have thought they would have more interest. Some are over 40 years old now although may not have done those years in traffic as they were stored initially due to DOO dispute on BedPan although 701's will take the accolade now for being stored longest before passenger use.
