When I were a lad I used to see daily van trains from Cadbury at Moreton which went through the Docks to the Birkenhead - Chester line (originally via West Kirby). These were hauled by Crabs and 0-6-0Ts until these were replaced by 2-6-4Ts and Black 5s in 1967. Where did these trains go? Did...
Afternoon All. Flicking idly through Longworths "Steam allocations" I noticed that it shows a couple of O4s allocated to Oxley in the early 1950s. It is not ridiculous as Oxley ran some of the GWR ROD versions. Does anyone know if this actually happened and, if so, why?
In Kenn Pearce's book "Shedside on Merseyside" he refers to "33 withdrawn (at Speke Junction shed") diesel shunters awaiting transfer to Australia". I remember seeing many shunters lined up in 1968 but I can't remember the details. I think they were all in the 12033- series. I had simply...
A very long shot (or two). Any idea when the last O4 working ran - I think I saw one around 1956? Other than O4, 8F and 9F what other engines have turned up on these workings? I seem to remember a Standard 5 (of all things) reported.
I was surprised to read that the tender attached to Black 5s had coal capacity of 9 tons. This seems remarkably large for a medium power locomotive. If this accurate, hy such a large capacity?
Afternoon All,
I used to see these lines very frequently until a few years ago:
Hexthorpe Jct - Bentley Jct
Kirk Sandall Jct - St Catherine's Jct -Brancliffe East Jct
Kirkby Lne End Jct - Pye Bridge Jct.
I have not been to this area for years, can anyone tell me whether these lines are:
1...
Just a tad obscure but does anyone know:
1. When the curve was last used by a passenger,
2. By goods, and,
3. When it was lifted.
I have a picture in my mind of the curve being still there about 1986 but disconnected at No1.
Strange how these details can bug you!
Today I recall with some incredulity that I used to see the Paddington - Birkenhead sleeper in Woodside station. I can't remember what the load was in terms of sleepers and day coaches. Thinking of the mid sixties, can anyone provide any information?
Perusing a One-inch map (Rev 1960-61), Sheet 92 "Pickering", I noticed for the first time (I've been interested in the area for decades) that a mineral railway ran virtually due north from New Bridge for about three miles. I assume that this was to serve quarries but little detail is shown...
I have long enjoyed these websites:
8dassociation.org
8erailwayassociation.org.uk
Prestonstation.org.uk
These sites are based around the sheds at Widnes, Northwich and Lostock Hall.
Are there any other sites reflecting other sheds?
According to Hugh Longworth's "Allocatio Histories" in summer '65 five Standard 5s were transferred from Nuneaton to Croes Newydd (together with one from Shrewsbury). Most were transferred away by Spring '66. Does anyone know what they were used for?
Bit of a long shot!
Bit of a long shot but this has been bugging me for months. In 1966 (or possibly early '67) there were two ex-works Black 5s stored next to the Crewe lines at 6A. They were numbered 44xxx and were anagrams. Which ones were they, can anyone set my mind to rest?
Taking a train into Firenze at the weeekend I was surprised to see a water crane at the remains of the depot just outside SMN station. I was astonished to see another one at a platform end, I think platform 6. I tried to photograph them from our return train but was thwarted by other...
Although Llandudno Jct MPD closed to steam in October 1966 the above train (07.30 off Llandudno, I think) was frequently steam right to the end of the year (for example I had a Black 5 on the 28th). Does anyone know the provision and servicing arrangements involved? If the coastbound train was...
I hear that yesterday (Wednesday) double-headed 92s went north near Preston with a short rake of blood and custard stock and later appeared southbound now topping and tailing. They were shortly followed by a WCR 47/57. Don't know what the times were. Anyone know what these workings were?
Does anyone know when the original Peaks ceased to be routinely rostered to passenger trains. Amazingly my wife tells me she saw D4 on the Settle & Carlisle (God only knows when!) on an express but I only saw them on mineral trains in the Derby/Stoke areas. What routes did they cover for pass?
I think there are a few people from the power industry on this forum so maybe they could give a clue about something I have often wondered.
Just suppose that everyone in the country dropped dead at midday today - how long would the National Grid supply electricity?
