Afternoon All. Flicking idly through Longworths "Steam allocations" I noticed that it shows a couple of O4s allocated to Oxley in the early 1950s. It is not ridiculous as Oxley ran some of the GWR ROD versions. Does anyone know if this actually happened and, if so, why?

Walmsley does not mention any such allocation. However, Oxley had its GWR’s 3000 series ex-ROD locos until 1956, so could they have been sent for spares and there has been a touch of confusion over their exact status? There is nothing in Part Ten of the RCTS history.

Just guesswork, but might an allocation like this have been made if there were issues of some sort with the ex ROD 3000 class? IIRC the
GWR borrowed some 04s from the LNER in 1940 which it kept for a couple of years or so. Did the proximity of Stafford Road Works to Oxley have any significance?

The NER decided to finish with its 04’s in summer 1951. Nine worked briefly on the WR before being swapped for ER WD’s. WR needed extra freight locos at that time.

The locos concerned 63620/8/73, 63770, 63812/6/23/35/81 were transferred to WR on 2/9/51 (there is a 20/9/51 misprint in Yeadon 24A for one of them). 63620, 63770, 63823/81 then went to 40B on 16/9/51 and the remainder to 38A on 23/9/51.

The WR sheds involved were Oxley and Southall.

BRDatabase lists all of these as being On Loan to the WR, which may be why there is confusing information.

EDIT: ‘is‘ altered to ‘may be‘ as this is not definite, just a suggestion.

Thank you. I didn't spot the Southall connexion.

The GWR RODs, by the 1950s, had 30 years of "adaptations" by Swindon from the condition received, in particular for the various small fittings where spares recovery can be useful, so were quite a bit different in detail from the O4s (which, of course, had gone their own way with the LNER as well).
