    Northern services over uncommon routes

Don't forget that Chester - Runcorn is summer only, Saturday only.. I'm not sure that the Ellesmere Port to Warrington train runs on Saturdays??

    Signal Boxes

It's the same size as a sky dish and appears to have a sky type lnb. What would it be used for other than catching the match?

    Signal Boxes

Helsby station has a mechanical signal box located between platforms 2&3 which is accessible to view close up (but not of course to go into). The signal box at Frodsham junction has a satellite dish on it. Proper comfort.

    Living by the line

As a child our garden used to back onto the Helsby to Mouldsworth line. A plethora of class 25, class 40 and class 47 plus the odd (now heritage) DMU in the summer and Peaks on rail tours. Happy days.

    Class 150 at Man Picc

It was still there this evening. I wonder how long it will be before NR start charging rent?

    Class 150 at Man Picc

Thank you. It has been there a while.

    Class 150 at Man Picc

I've noticed a Northern class 150 sat at platform 11 at Man Picc that is marked up not to be moved. I first spotted it last week and it was still there tonight. Does anyone know why it is parked there?

Council hopes Halton curve and Ditton station will be reopened by 2028.

Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth used the curve recently. Information is in this excellent newsletter. http://www.nwrail.org.uk/nwnews.htm

Helsby to Manchester Picc - Commute

I prefer the Class 175, being over 6ft tall. Plenty of leg room. Mouldsworth to Manchester could be an alternative route for me but it takes so long..... OK on a Saturday run out but not on a cold, wet Monday morning.

Helsby to Manchester Picc - Commute

As a seasoned veteran of a whole week now on this route I can declare that from Helsby, the 0721 has seats whilst the 0749 is standing room only and very unpleasant. I have been taking the 1651 and the 1721 home from Piccadilly and they are both fine from Picc, rammed from Oxford road. Yesterday...

Helsby to Manchester Picc - Commute

Thanks. I don't mind paying a little bit more for the added flexibility it provides. I must admit I don't fancy riding the Mid Cheshire Line much on those dreadful Pacers but sometimes needs must and the route provides back up in case of problems with ATW, as we have recently seen at Picc :D...

Helsby to Manchester Picc - Commute

Thank you. I'll be trying out both in the coming weeks I imagine. I'm looking forward to not having to drive 76 miles a day at the rush hour. as I have done for the past 10 years. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- WOuld a straightforward Helsby to Picc season ticket not allow a...

Helsby to Manchester Picc - Commute

I'm about to start a new job based in Manchester city centre so for the first time since I left school (a long, long time ago) I am on a route where I can commute by train.:D When I used to occasionally travel to Sheffield during the rush hour a few years ago, the train from Helsby to Picc was...

Council hopes Halton curve and Ditton station will be reopened by 2028.

Such a simple, straightforward and (relatively) cheap project to undertake. I'm sure the people of Wales would love a direct(ish) route into JLA and Lime St. From a selfish perspective, it would mean I didn't have to change at Chester for Liverpool or drive into the city. But of course this has...

    Helsby-ellesmere port line

The pasengers used to be there, I was one and the service was regularly used. The service started to suffer badly when electrification was not extended to Helsby because of objections from Shell regarding the proximity of a plant to the third rail, a plant that no longer exists. How can you...

    Loco-hauled services - future?

Used to love loco hauled trains in the 70's and 80's. I used to travel to Manchester and North Wales a lot and many of the services were hauled by Class 40 and 47 with MK1 and Mk2 coaches. Even the odd Class 25 showed its face. The trains were long, quiet and comfortable. To get to Liverpool...

    WCML today

Quite right!:D Still in the aspirational plans for Halton Council. http://www.runcornandwidnesweeklynews.co.uk/runcorn-widnes-news/runcorn-widnes-local-news/2011/10/20/thousands-of-homes-and-marina-planned-for-runcorn-55368-29623308/ And some money has been allocated for a 'feasibility...

    WCML today

I heard something earlier today that there was a signalling problem at Winsford and that Liverpool and Warrington bound trains were affected.
