I recently booked a journey with LNER. There were no advances available for the trip so I booked an Off-Peak single. I was surprised when I looked at the e-ticket that it stated the itinerary was now 'Mandatory Reservations'.
Is this true? I'd always taken tickets of this type to be valid on...
I was on the 1207 Aberdeen to Edinburgh today. After boarding a 170 we were advised the unit had failed and we were swapped to a 158.
Fair play to Scotrail for keeping the job going but I'm curious how deep the second order disruption is. Scotrail now have two units, at different ends of the...
RTT is showing the first four services between Aberdeen and Inverness were cancelled or partially cancelled (including the Huntly-Aberdeen) due to 'problems with the traction equipment'. Was this really spectacular bad luck on 4 individual units,or was there something else going on?
Just left Aberdeen and noticed that the depot there is operated by LNER. Seems something of an anomaly given that RTT suggests only two of their units visit on a typical weekday. In contrast many more Scotrail units (and the sleeper) make use of it.
How/why did LNER end up operating this depot...
I've recently discovered that Scotrail limit availability of their Super Off Peak tickets to Smart Card holders (https://www.scotrail.co.uk/super-off-peak-tickets).
Do any of the resident experts have opinions on whether this is within the letter, or spirit, of the rules governing availability...
Ongoing problems at King's Cross today - it seems to be taking a huge amount of time to clear a 'broken down train'. Purely out of curiosity could anyone offer any further explanation?
I'm shortly going to have a week away and will be using the five day break of journey allowance on an Anytime Return to spend two days at an intermediate location, before then travelling to the final destination on the ticket.
My question is; should my initial journey be significantly delayed...
I'll shortly need to travel from Aberdeen to Newcastle, where I will spend two nights, before then travelling to Doncaster for two further nights prior to returning to Aberdeen. If I've understood the rules properly it appears that an Anytime Return would allow me to complete this whole journey...
A random, somewhat trivial question. What was the reason behind the extended noses on some of the older diesel locos such as Deltic, 37s and 40s. It appears impractical as it limits crew visibility and must make judging distances for 'delicate' shunting work more difficult.
Therefore I presume...
Prompted by an earlier thread I'm curious about barrier coaches. It was stated that their sole purpose is to facilitate coupling locomotives to vehicles with none compatible couplings. Is there really no better option than to use a 60+ foot long coach to solve this seemingly simple mechanical...
Currently sat adjacent to a LNER Mk4 set. I noticed on coach B a tank, below floor level, roughly centre, with a contents gauge. It didn't look like water or waste for the toilet.
Satisfy my curiosity, what's it for?

What are 3T10 and 3T11? The reversal at Insch must involve a fairly unusual shunting move.
Can anyone explain this?

Why does this ECS run from Aberdeen to Dyce to Aberdeen before finally then heading to Huntly to form the morning service to Aberdeen?
Passing through Insch recently I spotted what looked to me like an something of an anomaly.omission. Being uninformed on these matters I was wondering if anyone could offer an explanation, please forgive any errors in terminology.
On the Inverness bound line (platform 1) there is no 'starting'...
Following another early morning arranging alternative travel at the last minute I'm left wondering if there are persistent problems on this line.
Recently there seem to have been a number of issues with the new set up between Forres and Elgin, are there any problems with the new installation...
As a regular passenger through Darlington it has always seemed to me to have more lines passing through than it needs.
I understand the use of the 'loop' lines outside the station, but there is the line adjacent to the southbound platform's line. This looks used, but by what? There would...
I'd appreciate some help from someone who knows a wee bit more than me.
I have often travelled from Nottingham to Aberdeen via Crewe to use the sleeper up, and return on a day train via the ECML which was a valid route. Planning a trip for next week none of the booking engines now offer this...
Booked on a seated sleeper to Inverness in a week's time. There were no Solo (standard) supplements available at the time, but I was advised that if there was a spare cabin I could upgrade on the train. I'm just curious to know if anyone has any opinion on what my chances would be?
As ever...
