Barrier Coaches

Prompted by an earlier thread I'm curious about barrier coaches. It was stated that their sole purpose is to facilitate coupling locomotives to vehicles with none compatible couplings. Is there really no better option than to use a 60+ foot long coach to solve this seemingly simple mechanical problem?

Worth remembering that Barrier coaches also provide braking force when the unit they are dragging cannot be braked directly.

Clearly in some cases there are locos which have the right couplers and connections to haul MUs directly and where possible that seems to be the preffered option- but with many different coupler types and coupler heights that's not easy and modifying locos to carry MU autocouplers is expensive.

If shorter vehicles existed, they could be used instead. The chosen vehicles tend to be selected from what's available at the time at a suitable price and possibly also with suitable operating characteristics (e.g. top speed). And what the others have said.

Yes, available, cheap/free, otherwise unemployed, compatible, certified for the required running and braking. It's not really wasteful to drag around 60 feet of coach, it's not like that 60 feet could be otherwise put to use! The Class 20s used/use oil tanks as barrier vehicles on LU stock. Simple problem but an old Mk 2 is a deceptively simple solution than engineering a coupling adaptor which may be more susceptible to fail anyway!

...and of course recent conversions (at Eastleigh) using vehicles from the likes of 508s are using stock that would otherwise have been scrapped, so must be one of the cheaper options.

It's a rather nicely engineered solution those 508-based EMU translators. Even have integral tail lights fitted. The cab ends are used to couple to the dragged EMU, clearly since they already had compatible couplers

Strictly speaking they are translators not barriers - which were originally used at each end of dangerous loads to reduce the risk in the event of a collision.

Shorter vehicles would probably be four-wheelers and might be subject to operating restrictions. Sometimes also the MU being hauled is unbraked and having a heavier translator each end increases the brake force. Some EMUs can now be coupled to, hauled and braked by modified 37s with no need for a translator.

Some are translators but some are true barrier vehicles.

Standard 20t brake vans were fine for moving tightlock fitted units around in the 80s but Mk4 stock needs a specially adapted coach to prevent damage to the gangways.

Thank you for the replies, a lot of new information for me, although it still seems that these vehicles take up a lot of track for the job(s) they do. Does this not 'waste' a lot of valuable space in sidings and yards?

Adapting a loco in that manner might at first sight seem simple but it isnt, and it is cheaper, faster and easier to use a coach or similar to adapt the couplings.

Probably being a bit dim, but how do the translators work?
What coupling do they use with the loco and do they then have specific coaches for each different coupling type and height stock they need to drag?
In terms of brake force is it only the ones between the loco and ‘load’ that help, with no braking from the barrier vehicles at the rear?

Not an expert but it varies from type to type.

A translator is used where the braking system or coupling height is different.

For example the translator coaches for 14x/15x DMU and 313-322 had equipment to activate the WestCode controlled brakes on these units.

The Networker EMU vans were similar but there was something different as a 47/7 (47701-717) was usually required to move them. Think it was because they had a higher air pipe pressure or could recharge the air quicker.

Things got silly with privatisation and the increased use of computers.

Each translator once had couplings for a set type. For example the some NSE ones could be used for all Tightlock units AC & DC.
