    Frustrated EC guard announcement

I agree about people talking over the announcements, it can be rather irritating. In addition to ticket announcements, I once heard a Scottish EC guard making repeated announcements about luggage being left in the aisles and vestibules, each time sounding more and more annoyed.

    Virgin Weekend First

Thanks for the info guys, the plan was to travel in standard to Edinburgh and then buy it on the Virgin service from there. I don't think a £15-20 upgrade is worth it for the hour or so from Dundee to Edinburgh. I normally travel with East Coast on a direct train to Peterborough and then change...

    Virgin Weekend First

I'm contemplating travelling with Virgin from Dundee to Milton Keynes at the end of this month and buying weekend first upgrades between Dundee and MK. Most of the trains require a change at Birmingham or Crewe, so will the first upgrade be valid on both trains, or is it £15 per train?

Longest journey time on direct train compared to direct distance

Wick to Inverness has got to be a good candidate hasn't it? East Coast says the train takes 4 hours 15 mins, with Google Maps saying to drive it takes around 2 hours 20 mins.

    Random Ignorance

I seem to recall the Class 43s output a different power supply to the coaching stock than other locomotives, so the MK.3 coaches can only work with the HSTs without modifications. I'm not sure about the others though.

    East Coast seating plan wrong?

So the little niggling part of me that said HSTs did have them and I sat in one was right! I assumed I'd got them muddled with Electras . In coach L, I'm aware the disabled seat faces south, but seem to recall somebody near the end of the carriage facing North in an individual seat, so...

    East Coast seating plan wrong?

I'm aware the Mk.4 coaches have a number of individual airline seats, but I don't think the HSTs do. I'm not 100% sure though, which is frustrating as I was in first class on an EC HST only a few weeks ago!

    Problems with East Coast Website.

Quite a few land line voice providers do now have 0845 calls included in the free calls packages though, meaning there's no difference in price!

    VT Access to 1st Lounge

The last time I encountered a child in first class he was travelling with his parents perfectly well behaved. I think he was probably under 5, so stopping the sale of first class child tickets wouldn't have stopped him travelling in first. More recently I heard there was a boy who spent the...

    Faulty conductor equipment!

For things like fraud there are any person powers of arrest, however I doubt many guards would make a citizen's arrest for something like that. I think if a BTP Special did that too often it could be considered a conflict of interests by the brass in their force, so I doubt they would. There's...

    Train Diesel Fill-ups

I'd heard it was downgraded and some units being maintained elsewhere, so wasn't sure how much it was downgraded and what was left.

    Train Diesel Fill-ups

I'm pretty sure they're stabled in the sidings at Bletchley, I'm not sure about refuelling or maintenance - are there any facilities left at Bletchley? Also, do TOCs have to pay duty on fuel?

Terrified passenger pulled along platform after train doors close on his ankle

On the subject of the perspex covers, the guard of the EC service I was using on Saturday needed to access the first aid box in the carriage I was in, and it took him quite a few goes at the perspex with his T key to get it open. If it took him a while and he has a metal pointed implement...

    British Transport Police

One interesting point I read with regards to BTP and jurisdiction was that English or Welsh BTP Special Constables (volunteer police officers with all the police powers) had jurisdiction throughout England & Wales, whereas paid police officers had the restrictions discussed above. I believe it...

    East Coast delay repay

I only got 1x the cost of my advance single for a delay of 6 hours just before Christmas. I had however not bought my ticket back until after I'd submitted my delay repay claim.

    London Transfers

One of my mates did end up cutting it fine once on a Paddington - Kings Cross transfer as there was a closure for engineering works on the Circle/Hammersmith & City line between the two, so he ended up going via Oxford Circus.

    Carriage cab view

It would add to the complexity of it, but if a TOC were serious about deploying it, presumably it could be killed as soon as the emergency brake is activated and not re-enabled until the train starts to move again. With a delay of say 10 seconds that would hopefully prevent anything grisly being...

    Season ticket bought at Farringdon

Tickets from north of London on the Thameslink route are typically issued to "London Thameslink" rather than "London Terminals", so a ticket from Bedford or further south to St Pancras would be issued to London Terminals. Last time I travelled on a ticket with the destination "London...

    Carriage cab view

I spent a summer working as a security guard in a supermarket, and we didn't have SIA licenses although we watched the CCTV. I enquired during the interview and was told that as they were security guards employed by the company and working for them, there was no need. A couple of times the male...

Presumably EC could make it available on their WiFi portal though, with the appropriate delay. Then people could access it on their laptop, phone or ipod etc.
