I guess a hypothetical 170+155 diagram could be arranged so the leading unit is used in each direction (if platform lengths won't allow the whole consist to be available for passenger use)

I don't get the point someone is trying to make.

A driver has to sign all traction in the formation. So if they don't sign 155 then the train cannot move.

Don't think Scot-rail has released any more 170s lately.
So the plot thickens.

It's from Neville Hill to Crewe so are you implying all the 170s which have transferred have been refurbished? It's also pathed as a 158 so I don't see why it can't be a 158 being moved for refurbishment work unless Arriva Traincare have done all the work they are going to do to the 158s.

Can I ask how many turbostars was northern expect to get and how many they are actually getting and what are they doing to replace the ones they arnt getting

16 x 3 car 170s from Scotrail which are supposed to arrive this year. They also supposed to introduce 18 x 2 car DMUs which are 170s or equivalents by 2022, those units haven't been confirmed. I'm not aware of them not getting any 170s they are supposed to get even if some made by delayed by a few months. Scotrail was originally supposed to release 29 x 170s but the smaller number was known about before the Northern franchise was let. Where there are question marks is over the 769s (bi-mode 319s) and whether Northern will get all the 150s they were supposed to from GWR.

So how many 170s are in service now? 1 in Northern livery and 3/4 in Scotrail livery?

459 and 461 appeared on the Harrogate line today, in Scotrail colours.459 at least also had a Scotrail interior.

A 170 just passed through Leeds from Heaton, possibly this unit finally coming down?

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O33499/2018/08/28/advanced

Heaton still has a 170 in the sun on Saturday.

It could be another 170 at Heaton; since whatever ran in that slot appears to have been averaging over 90mph between Thirsk and Skelton Junction (based on data from that page(backup http://archive.fo/rgYox)), or maybe I just miscalculated. I understand that would make a 170 the most likely candidate, especially if spotted at Leeds.

Went on 459 yesterday and the safety posters above the door show a 1st class section behind both driving cabs but it’s just normal standard seating.
The 170s will shortly be deployed on a very small number of Leeds to York via Micklefield possibly the last one off York has been mentioned

Something I have noticed travelling more recently on the 170s, at some stations when the driver sets off there seems to be quite a significant 'rollback' before the train starts moving forwards!

Also when do Northern plan to kit all of these out with USB and power? (If at all), I also note that on the ones without the 'cleaners hoover' plug sockets don't seem to be live either.

The 170s have the combined power and brake control so on an incline the driver takes the brake off and then has to take power which can lead to a slight bit of roll back, Same as the 333s.
There is currently 3 at Crewe having the northern treatment 2 that went straight from Scotland and one that came to Holbeck first. The cleaners sockets can be turned off in the conductors door control panel and we’ve been told not to touch it

Do they not have a brake hold button, which keeps the brakes on up to a certain speed to help prevent rollback

I believe they do. I think you hold said button in while taking the first notch of power, and then release it once the power has taken to release the brakes. Or something like that...

Makes sense. So I guess it’s just a case of drivers releasing the button a smidge early

Wonder if this will also involve the peak time service which does York-Leeds, sits in Leeds all day then goes back to York during the afternoon peak? It also looked like tonight's 1809 Leeds-Harrogate was a 170 in place of the usual 155

The 1809 has been a 170 all week and has been sat in platform 1C all day where the 155 used to be

The 23.13 York to Leeds has been a 170 all this week. The 170's and 333's are both fitted with a brake hold button for starting on inclined to prevent rolling back. You hold it in until you here power being produced.

Hold in the hill start button with your thumb, dragging brake light lights, and release when the engine revs up. No roll back, which wouldnt be good on an assessment. Essential for the Fife Circle
