None have moved north for conversion yet - this is probably still the plan because they wanted some complete units to arrive (built from ex 460 vehicles only) before releasing any 458s.

I haven't seen any up to date diagrams, but if there are more than 24 in total in service per day I'd be surprised, the utilisation of the class hasn't generally been too high.

There are no rovers that I can think of in the area, but the main use apart from Waterloo - Readings is going to be the Guildford - Ascot shuttles - the latter uses 2 trains per day IIRC, and if you wanted to see them the only easy answer seems to be a spell at Ascot?

Two are used on Guildford-Ascots as mentioned above. They'll generally stick around on the shuttles for a couple of weeks before they get swapped. The rest will all be out on Waterloo-Reading or peak Waterloo-Aldershot via Ascot services. The best place to get them is the Travelcard Zones and then make a trip to Ascot or Guildford for the other two. If you want to ride them all the best bet is Clapham Junction-Richmond moves, it's a fairly short connection at both ends. The two on Guildford-Ascot services can be done in half an hour since they follow each other. Catch one Guildford-Ash and the other back. You'd need to leave Guildford at 0800, 1030, 1300, 1530, 1800 or 2030.

Usually three of four parked at Wimbledon depot each day as well, visible from anything on the main line.

Thanks to all for your help with this - I'll be heading out in the next few days and hopefully the trip will be fruitful. Cheers!

In addition to the Waterloo to Reading and Guildford to Ascot routes mentioned earlier, 458s very occasionally wander on to other routes. There was one on a Woking to Waterloo morning peak stopping service a week or two back.

But I wouldn't recommend waiting around to see the next one on this route!

There was a period last year when a pair made an off-peak trip to Alton for a couple of weeks.

I suspect you are one of around one people that do this. It never will be the "Reading main line"- I'd suspect it carries very few Reading-Waterloo end-to-end passengers, with most passengers using an intermediate station for the start, end or both of their journey.
but it has the features of a main line. It has a variety of fast, semi fast and slow journeys, it is a main trunk route for busy branches, and it passes through several important stations.

Does anyone know when the first unit will be out, and which vehicles will form it. One is visible inside Doncaster Wabtec, in SWT blue, orange and red, but could not see the front of the unit.

July/August is the current estimate I've been hearing, the issue with corrosion has complicated things more than they would like.

Completion of the fleet by next summer (June 2014 was the original target) looks ever more unlikely. I can't see how they can recover from a 4-5 month delay, and that's assuming there are no further delays.

I don't see any front end photos, let alone a 'Desiro-style cab'. These are just the same ones linked throughout the thread? :/

They are not getting a "Desiro style cab" though, they are getting a Desiro compatible cab, as has been mentioned many times in this thread.

The actual cab will remain but will have a Dellner coupling and a normal gangway grafted onto it.

So the 458 (or a generic) cab for all units with a normal gangway, I read. Sorry for that, I guess the wording has been muddled in places, as so many times before has done... But I still haven't found any front end shots post-rebuild!

Not very attractive, but functional. We will have to wait to see it in person to judge.

A short video published by SWT about the 458/5 project, no real new information but interesting none the less. :)

Hiding in your shadow
It's to hide the fact the rest of the train has corroded to nothing but rust!

Maybe they want the customers to be accustomed to the view of closed doors so they won't be disappointed when the doors fail to release? They are Alstom products afterall .
