Wow, I didn't think they could make the 458s even uglier; but yet again I've been proved wrong! But if it does its' job well it doesn't matter.

Does anyone know what's been done with the actual cab interior and equipment? Have the ex-460 units been given a 458 style drivers desk or will both have a new design?

So, the last report of expected I saw (Rail a few weeks ago) said that after static testing the first pair would be delivered to SWT by the end of July.

Have they? Bet not.

Let's put it this way there was still 458/0's running the route between Waterloo and Reading last week and there has been no sign of the 450's from the Windsor route which are I believe being displaced by the 458/8 trains.

Just called at Doncaster (quarter past 11 09/08/2013) and a 458/5 was sticking its nose out the end of the paint shed in Wabtec. A sheet was over the top of the new gangway and where I assume the number will be. Doesn't look too bad

All very well it being stuck in Doncaster. SWT have now stopped claiming that they will enter service in the summer and the latest I've heard is that they hope the first will be in service "by October".

The programme does seem to be slipping further and further back and there must surely be other issues apart from the initially cited corrosion. That the conversion of 450/5s back to 450/0s has halted, as have the finishing touches to platform extension work, suggest that all is not well.

There's mention in the other SWT EMU that the 458/5s may have 1st class after all? Is this true, or will they rather have an area like the 450/5s that can be converted easily to a separate 1st class if/when they move routes on introduction of potential new "metro" units?

Purchased the latest Today's Railways UK today (out two days early in my local newsagents), it states that the two driving cars that are now at Doncaster Wabtec following conversion work at Loughborough Brush are 67914 (ex 460004) and 67918 (ex 460008). Both will be put into set 458834.

Would like nicer if: -

• the yellow didn't overlap the sides
• above the cab windows was painted black
• the orange swoosh was further forward so it didn't overlap the windows

But overall it doesn't look too bad. And the 458/460 interiors are quite nice anyway, so with a Class 455 style 2+2 seating layout I think these will be quite nice.

It would appear to be the final product, I.e no fairing / exposed beams as per some other Modern units like the Desiro Fleet. Looks like it's painted in the same grey as used on the Bogies too.

The current 458s are a bit of a pain when it comes to attaching and detaching units, it takes up to 20 minutes at the moment.

If there had been any possibility whatsoever of bringing the 458 style gangway up to a functional standard, they'd have done it. Logically therefore, the fact they are willing to remove and throw away 60 existing gangways and replace them with another type, and then fit the ex 460s with 12 more, proves they were totally unacceptable.

The current situation is that the gangways are not split or joined outside the depot, and their only use is by train crew, there is no public access. So effectively the gangways are not really 'in service' anyway, as far as the public is concerned...

I do agree that 458 gangways have been troublesome to say the least and were considered not suitable for passenger use, whereas I would imagine that the newer Desiro style gangways will be public access when units are coupled together.

I think that's one of those 'chicken and egg' situations. I doubt compatibility was the primary purpose of the change, but once that change was decided upon, that would be a reasonable secondary aim.

Agree about the black above the windows would probably look better, but presumably the other two points, the orange going as far as the door and the yellow 'wrap round' the sides are just about making it [ie the livery design] as similar as possible to the 450?

Removing the massive ugly gangway, they look nothing like 450s and they look more like they used to.

I didn't really clarify that I was only referring to the 'shape of the orange bit' in the livery, so I've amended the post...
