Would the problem have occurred on a 450 or are better able to cope be used they were built more recently compared to the 456s?

I would say that the 450s would have probably coped slightly better but they were certainly struggling down the Pompey direct for most of yesterday and the grades on there aren't much worse than Pennyhill.
I live pretty close to Bagshot and can assure you the conditions for yesterday afternoon/evening were awful all over the county

Yes, but wheel slide prevention intervenes when the train experience wheel slide under braking. It can't do anything when a train is unable to gain sufficient grip to make it up a hill. 456s also have sanders fitted to help.

The question was about wheel slip (i.e. loss of adhesion under power) and you've talked about wheel slide (loss of adhesion under braking), which are two different things.

Correct, they were unable to make it up some of the banks.

ahhhhh, memories of struggling to get the up the banks at Denmark Hill, North Dulwich and Ewell East are flooding back lol

To be fair to them it's not just any gradients in the South that are causing trouble at this time of year - I was on 150001 last week with that struggling to depart Reading West, and both directions on the West of England line were causing delays on the weekend too!

It was fine in the morning. Just the afternoon where they got worse. Then they seemed to improve or at least it stopped raining but then the wet leaves would see be there from the earlier rain.

Plus the luxury of working destination displays?

Edit - I happened to travel on a 456 in an 8 car formation yesterday from Epsom to Dorking. Dire stuff - cramped, poorly-finished decoration, the ridiculous retention of the small window where the toilet used to be and, of course, no working cab front destination displays (will these ever work and do SWT even care?!), plus the internal displays showing the time as 00:00 and stating that the next station would be Vauxhall throughout.

Sorry to quote you over a year later, but today I saw a first for a Class 456. Working front destination displays! It's taken the best part of 3 years, but I saw not 1, but 3 456s with working front destinations today. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, and they're all going to work. Maybe they'll even sort out the still unreliable PIS on the 456s.

The railway equivalent of an estate agent has probably been round and suggested it is something the next owner (if there ever is one) will want to see working... :D

It's possible it has been picked up in the handback exam process by Porterbrook before the franchise ends.

How soon after the 707s start to enter service will South Western Railway start to return the 456s to Poterbrook?

I'm sure i caught 4 of these together (to form 8 coaches) the other week. I couldn't quite see to the rear of the train but it looked like 4 together rather than the more common 2 456's and a 455. I am informed however that they can't work together in 4s but i'm fairly convinced.

456s only go back when the Aventras come in. After the 707s are introduced the 456s go onto the main suburban services to form 10-car sets with pairs of 455s.

The 707s themselves do not result in anything being returned - they are additional trains to meet the CP5 HLOS capacity requirements.

Everything currently used on future 707 routes will be internally cascaded, and this has been explained numerous times.

You must surely already be aware of the overall plan, which is basically:

458/5s to the Reading line to replace 450s
450s to Ascot -Guildford to release 456s, and for mainline strengthening
456s to strengthen more main suburban servcies to 10 car from Dec 2017.

But that's the back! That's the one to tell me which train I just missed!

Good point! The destination boards work through the PIS system so the same is displayed on the front and rear. Any boards in the middle are blank. There is no provision for text to be entered manually like it can be on Desitos.

What a nonsense to have had these screens out of use for so many years after the units' refurbishment, only to be brought into use shortly before the units are likely to be withdrawn!

The fact that the whole fleet has had them brought in to use in the space of one weekend suggests it was not a difficult job too.

Shortly is relative. Isn't it about 3 years in both cases?
