Yes, but wheel slide prevention intervenes when the train experience wheel slide under braking. It can't do anything when a train is unable to gain sufficient grip to make it up a hill. 456s also have sanders fitted to help.
Correct, they were unable to make it up some of the banks.
I would say that the 450s would have probably coped slightly better but they were certainly struggling down the Pompey direct for most of yesterday and the grades on there aren't much worse than Pennyhill.
I live pretty close to Bagshot and can assure you the conditions for yesterday afternoon/evening were awful all over the county
It was fine in the morning. Just the afternoon where they got worse. Then they seemed to improve or at least it stopped raining but then the wet leaves would see be there from the earlier rain.I would say that the 450s would have probably coped slightly better but they were certainly struggling down the Pompey direct for most of yesterday and the grades on there aren't much worse than Pennyhill.

Plus the luxury of working destination displays?
Edit - I happened to travel on a 456 in an 8 car formation yesterday from Epsom to Dorking. Dire stuff - cramped, poorly-finished decoration, the ridiculous retention of the small window where the toilet used to be and, of course, no working cab front destination displays (will these ever work and do SWT even care?!), plus the internal displays showing the time as 00:00 and stating that the next station would be Vauxhall throughout.
Sorry to quote you over a year later, but today I saw a first for a Class 456. Working front destination displays! It's taken the best part of 3 years, but I saw not 1, but 3 456s with working front destinations today. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, and they're all going to work. Maybe they'll even sort out the still unreliable PIS on the 456s.
The railway equivalent of an estate agent has probably been round and suggested it is something the next owner (if there ever is one) will want to see working...![]()
How soon after the 707s start to enter service will South Western Railway start to return the 456s to Poterbrook?
456s only go back when the Aventras come in. After the 707s are introduced the 456s go onto the main suburban services to form 10-car sets with pairs of 455s.How soon after the 707s start to enter service will South Western Railway start to return the 456s to Poterbrook?

I saw a 456 with a working destination display yesterday! At last!
Which is exactly the discussion that we had last afternoon.
It was, but some of us who've been waiting for that a while weren't around to join in...![]()
And here is the proof of the working front destination boards.
But that's the back! That's the one to tell me which train I just missed!

What a nonsense to have had these screens out of use for so many years after the units' refurbishment, only to be brought into use shortly before the units are likely to be withdrawn!
Shortly is relative. Isn't it about 3 years in both cases?
