What would have happened if UK had not decided to go for 25kv AC but had stuck with 1500V DC as was extant on the Liverpool Street lines and Woodhead

Would we have more or less electrification ( dont know on this one) Would the move from DC to AC traction motors have still happened (Yes IMHO) ? How would substation technology have developed? But feel free to discuss anythong about this change and its aftermath.

Skipton - Settle - Ingleton - Bentham/Kirkby Lonsdale - Lancaster buses. Historical and present day.

This is about the 580/581/81 Kirkby Lonsdale Coach Hire service from Skipton to Lancaster, and changes to other services over time, reflecting rerouting of the through route. I lived near settle for 10 years around 1980 when the Pennine orange and black coaches ran the services. I even did...

Inserting amendments to paper rule book

I have a 1950's rule book that the owner kept up to date with amendments. The amendments applied are listed in the front endpapers. I assume a booklet was issued with printed amendments that would be stuck in the rule book. Some bits were simply pasted over the original text. Other bits involved...

I am currently scanning a 1977 BR prices manual. I will share the scans with TimetableWorld (TTW) so everyone can see it. There is a feature in TTW to add information about the item. I would like a short article to help describe what the book is and its importance to the railway at that time...

British Rail All Line Passenger Timetable European Suplement.

Back on pre Channel Tunnel days, when you bought a copy of the all line timetable, you got the European Supplement. This had connections from the UK to cities across Europe. They had to use ferry connections to get from UK to mainland Europe. Does anyone have one? Has anyone seen one for sale...

What features of new UK trains would you not fit.

Remember the adage - nothing is reliable as the part you dont fit. Also, some features of new trains are expensive/heavy/a maintenance liability So what stuff in new trains would you chuck in the skip rather than fit it to the trains? I understand some of the kit fitted to new trains is for...

Old railway museum in York before the NRM

Trying to remember this from when I was a kid. We definitely went there as a family. It was in the railway buildings near where the Railway Institute is today. I think it was the old LNER museum. Any memories to share?

Why don't buses carry makers badges?

My car has the makers name and the car model all over it in chrome letters like most cars. Trucks have their makers names over them too, but with buses, it seems not. Why?

Timetable change/improvement in Forest of Bowland from 8th April

The 11 Horton in Ribblesdale - Tosside, currently operated by North Yorkshire County Council, is to be extended to Clitheroe from 8th April. This fills a bus free hole in Bowland. Passes a lot of nothing and takes 1hr 15min from Settle to Clitheroe. Kudos to N Yorks and Lancashire for trying...

Worst examples of BR era "vandalism"?

I suppose most would think of the demolition of Euston, and the removal of the Doric arch. But I think this is worse - Its the north concourse at Leeds station, built by LMS in 1937 when they built the Queens Hotel and the Aire Street offices. But BR made the fine Art Deco concourse into a...

    Staff buses

This thread https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/career-change-to-bus-driver-kendal.259660/ has gone a little off topic discussing travel between the depot and joining your bus and vice versa. This is about how the staff travel between the depot and their bus. So what companies run staff...
