I've seen a lot of people complain about the slow journey times on the West / East Coastways both on this forum and in person. What can be done to improve these services, or do you think they work fine just as they are?
As mentioned on other threads, more people are now realising about the cheaper Southern fares you can purchase between London and Gatwick, for the minimal time difference compared to the Gatwick Express.
However, this is leading to many Southern services now becoming overcrowded with airport...
Faygate, (https://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ldbboard/dep/FGT) receives a half hourly service (during the strike day operating hours) in each direction on strike days, which represents a signficant increase in services compared to non strike days . One of the quirks of a strike day timetable...
Do you think train strikes are ethical?
The following reasons may want to be considered:
- People missing out on important events (e.g funerals) due to the often late notice of strikes
- Strikes seeming to impact the working class disproportionately due the working class often being more...
An idea for a hourly direct service to Brighton for both Redhill & Horsham. See below for an example calling pattern (with the train joining / detatching at Three Bridges):
Redhill - Earlswood - Horley - Gatwick Airport - Three Bridges
Horsham - Littlehaven - Ifield - Crawley - Three Bridges...
What items do you think should not be permitted on trains which are currently. Some examples to start:
- Alcohol (already banned on some TOC)
- Luggage over a certain dimension
- Ebikes / Bicycles in general
Quite a broad area but what are people's opinions on the current Southern calling pattern? Do some stations need more services (or less), are new routes needed? A few starter discussion points can be found below
Should Clapham Junction & Redhill get a direct service to Brighton?
Should Three...
Services along the South coast since the start of the pandemic have got progressively worse, is it time a new express service was introduced with some of the freed paths (e.g XC reduced service to Bournemouth, culling of the Worthing shuttles etc...)?
One idea might be from Poole to Brighton...
Several towns (e.g Crewe) appear to get far more services than the town requires principally due to the station also acts as a major interchange. Which other towns do you think are overserved in terms of services (can just be generally overserved (considering passenger numbers) or due to being...
Currently, Southern services take approximately 2 hrs between Southampton Ctl, making multiple stops at relatively minor stops (e.g Durrington On Sea & Ford) whereas the GWR "express" services only take 1hr40. With the GWR services to Brighton potentially being withdrawn, surely there is a need...
Imagine you just own a basic train carriage with none of the features below. Assume the carriage has basic seats(without tables), a bin and all the relevant health & saftey (including first aid) information and equipment. Rank the following features from what you think is the most important to...
Which do you prefer on a train? Does your preference change with the distance of your journey? What is the minimum distance service (in hours or miles/km) that you think requires a trolley service?
Evidently I guess from reading the IET thread that most people seem to prefer the buffet car, but...
This practice is already occurring at various airlines to avoid delays reaching the dreaded 3 hour mark, where substantial compensation has to be paid out. Do you think this practice will be adopted by any UK TOC's (including any likely routes or TOC's who may adopt this practice) and are there...
There is a lot of negativity about expensive tickets across the media... seemingly on a constant basis.
But there are some very good value tickets to be found e.g Swansea to Bristol Parkway 1st class £8 (with 16-25 railcard)
What other examples are there, I am particuarly interested in good...
Hi I have an assessment day (the 1st phase) at Swindon on Tuesday for a driver position.
I have a few questions, and if anyone knows any information, I would be very grateful.
1) What time does the assessment normally end?
2) Is there a lunch break, and if so, is food/drink provided?
3) Is...
So I went to London from Weymouth last weekend booking using the £15 SWR single offer. However railcard discounts do not work on top of this. What is the explanation behind this? Personally I think that railcard discounts should be able to be used alongside the special offer, else it seems...
SWR has now been operating for around 9 months. They seem to have had a mixed start to their life as a TOC, with several of the positives and negatives I have found listed below. I can only speak for the long distance lines (e.g London to Weymouth) as I do not travel on the suburban routes. I...
Could a service from Weymouth to Folkestone / Ramsgate / Margate be feasible?
It would only call at medium / large sized stations. e.g Weymouth - Dorchester South - Wareham - Poole - Bournemouth - Christchurch - New Milton - Brockenhurst - Southampton Ctl - Fareham - Portchester - Cosham -...
Do Cornwall and Devon need more faster non-stop services from London? i.e London, Reading, Exeter, Plymouth and select stops onto Penzance?
This would also help in the summer when tourism peaks, when services can get very busy.
Surely one or two more "express" services would make more people...
Deliberately leaving this quite broad, can include infrastructure, timetabling, train stock etc...
General improvements (i.e improvements that could take place all over the county) are preferred to specific improvements (i.e removing X amount of trees on the X line to improve visibility). Of...
