As mentioned on other threads, more people are now realising about the cheaper Southern fares you can purchase between London and Gatwick, for the minimal time difference compared to the Gatwick Express.
However, this is leading to many Southern services now becoming overcrowded with airport traffic (until Gatwick) , whereas the Gatwick Express appears to be underutilised. Does the current situation need to be changed, and if so how, to prevent the overcrowding?

I don't believe in scamming overseas travellers but if there is a price differential it needs to reflect some added value. And it doesn't. Therefore it is a problem.
Hayes & Harrington to Heathrow is £6.20, so I assume you're thinking of around £4. This would be far less than GTR are charging (up to around £11 for London to Gatwick) for it's 'premium' brands, but would put the cost for many shorter journeys up massively. Presumably Horley/Salfords etc to...

The situation 40 years ago was very different to today!
It was a very different story back then; Gatwick Express services were operated by InterCity and Network Southeast ran the stopping trains.
The InterCity rolling stock was vastly superior, with additional luggage capacity, comfortable table seating throughout, genuine 1st class with 1+2 seating, at-seat refreshments and tickets could be purchased on the train.
In contrast, today GTR uses the GX units on it's Southern branded routes on a regular basis, no catering is provided, the type of train is no better, and the company threatens tourists on GX with Penalty Fares; all the differences that existed 40, 30, 20 years ago are long gone!

As you can see above, the PAYG fares, for off peak travel, are £22.90 using GX or only £10.00 avoiding GX, calling at - but not tapping out and back in at - East Croydon.
But the non-"premium" £10 through fare is, in reality, priced at a premium; it can be reduced to only £8.10 by tapping out and back in at Croydon.
