Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

I was caught up in this earlier, I was heading north. It was literally as it happened somonewhere north of Welwyn Garden City. There as a service to Horsham that was stopped just north of Welwyn Garden City and was there for a significant amount of time. Doing North there was a train heading to...

Will fleets need to have more spare units ordered for slack if more extreme weather makes derailments or unreliability more likely in the future?

My mistake I didn’t realise the managed to recreate a set after Selby and Hatfield. They used 2 Eurostar’s initially so the other was probably covering the refurbishment. I know extra HSTs are growth related for Leeds every 30 mins.

Will fleets need to have more spare units ordered for slack if more extreme weather makes derailments or unreliability more likely in the future?

It is interesting, as when you look at LNER, they lost 2 sets. They found a solution based on what was available at the time. 373s the first time around then the HSTs. I think in the past other fleets have had an extension in thier orders to replace crash victims. I am sure the 2x 150/2 lost...

What actually happens when a station lift breaks down?

Depends on the station I have found. At Welwyn Garden City they find a solution. (Double back to Hatfield / Stevenage depending on where you are going). St Pancras is awful. If you are using the GN routes you get taken to Finsbury Park. Thameslink double back at Farringdon. The worse is London...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

I don’t have twitter. (As I don’t agree with its business model). I just use the trains so have to rely on what is given to us on the platforms or the national rail app.

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

I think the biggest problem we have isn’t this has happened again, but the lack of communication / back up plan to keep us moving.

Expansion of LNER 70-min flex trial area ("Simpler Fares")

Be interesting to look back a find out which post we predicted this would happen. Still waiting for them to extend the trial to more stations as they work out where we are booking to instead so we can continue to get off-peak fares.

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

There are some 379s on the southern end of the route. Not sure where they are going (could be Peterborough or Letchworth). Also surprised about fitting of ETCS in the 379. If they can do the 158s anything should be possible. Not the best out of Finsbury Park this evening either. They are...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

I was very surprised by two things I say this morning. The 0738 Welwyn Garden City - London Kings Cross (Ex Royston) was heavily delayed by a level crossing incident. They ran it non-stop from Welwyn Garden City and even more surprisingly they put it on the fast. As a knock on of this the 0800...

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

That is a possibility, or removing of the extended metal bits altogether. I feel it is the combination of both causing the problem. If you look at the ramps next time you travel you will see why they could be a problem.

First ETCS train operates on the East Coast Mainline

The 387still there. Complete with graffiti tag. (Not sure if that was acquired at Hornsey). Perhaps it had a run out on Sunday. 1788267916 Thank you. I have seen the 180 at Welwyn in previous blockades.

First ETCS train operates on the East Coast Mainline

What trains will be using it. The 717s is a little underwhelming as it is such a short journey. The 91s clearly won’t. I can’t keep up with if the 387s are fitted. (Just 101 which doesn’t do much all day at Hornsey is my last understanding)

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

I don’t understand why they are not running to Ely. Unless it is typical GTR style of not telling passengers the whole truth. (Ok it isn’t GTR any more it is nationalised. However it has as yet not changed the “you are on your own” philosophy when disruption happens.

Can trains access St Pancras from the southern end of the ECML ?

Back in the past the 317s that operated to / Moorgate to between the MML and ECML to get to Hornsey. They were dragged but not sure how. I suspect Euston will probably be easier. I have done that on the sleeper with a reversal in Wembley area.

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

Just going back to the struggles getting a wheelchair onboard. The ramp certainty is part of the problem. They have metal guiders after the top of the ramp (at least 10cm - apologies I didn’t have a tape) which means the wheelchair user is much closer to the pole before they can turn. Apparently...

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

I have a hunch that it probably isn‘t possible to remove the pole from the centre of the doors nearest the wheelchair areas. However travelling today on both 700s, 717s and 387s, the 387s are much better designed for wheelchair users. However putting into perspective it is only about 30 seconds...

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

So how come it is such a problem when the ramps are needed? (It is as bad on the 717s as well as I found out this evening) - The station staff agreeing with the point and have said many of them have already highlighted it.

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

Are they going to do something about the totally unsuitable layout for wheelchair users (The big pole right in the middle of their turning circle). Granted a wheelchair users would never get on a crush loaded train anyway. However this is typical example of train design that is not tested with...

Newcastle - Sunderland pre T&W Metro

Did the 185s kill it off then? (Never cleared)

Newcastle - Sunderland pre T&W Metro

I do remember the ”Scotrail services”. They never went beyond Newcastle during my time there. I think one of them even overnighted at Heaton. It was amazing they Survived so long after privatisation, although I understand that there were a reasonable amount of people that would do The direct...
