Lochaber narrow gauge railway : did it reach Loch Laggan ?

In the time I have to spend on it I could not find the OS map of the period (if anyone does find it please link to it for us ! ), but the route is more or less where the Wiki article [which is largely based, it seems, on the book the Albaman mentioned above] said it ran. 1788542533 There is an...

Lochaber narrow gauge railway : did it reach Loch Laggan ?

On the left hand map (Bartholomew Half Inch 1947-47) look at the north end of Loch Treig, and you'll see the track of the branch to Loch Laggan. The map also has the course of the under ground aqueduct taking the water down the hill to power the Lochaber hydroelectric scheme.

Lochaber narrow gauge railway : did it reach Loch Laggan ?

Thanks for that. In the meantime I have confirmed the branch from Loch Treig to Loch Laggan did exist and found a map of the route (on the exceptionally useful National Library of Scotland page) ...

Railway Performance Society "Fastest Times" over the "main" main lines (Jul 2026 edition)

Have found the log of this run, note the multiple instances of 140mph running (incidentally the ride of the Mk4 coaches at that speed was reported as "excellent") which brings back memories of the "140mph club" of drivers on the GWML just after the HSTs were bought in ! Also note 128mph minimum...

British electrification OHL dates (mainly 25kV plus the most significant 1.5KV DC)

I didn't mind doing it whilst there was a definite objective goal (e.g. line from A to B electrified in 20XX) if you know what I mean ! But now, with the advent of "discontinuous electrification" this no longer seems to be the case.

Lochaber narrow gauge railway : did it reach Loch Laggan ?

I have added most of the Lochaber Narrow Gauge railway to my Cobbs historical atlas but did the top section (from Loch Treig to Loch Laggan) ever exist ? The Wiki page is unclear if it did or not and it is not on any of the OS one inch maps I can find online, though the bottom section from Loch...

British electrification OHL dates (mainly 25kV plus the most significant 1.5KV DC)

Thanks for that though I must admit that with the advent of "discontinuous electrification" I am losing motivation to keep the list up to date as it becomes rather subjective and inaccurate....

Sign language on train route information displays (and station departure boards)

That was certainly not the case on the on train display.

Sign language on train route information displays (and station departure boards)

Why, when the text is just above the "signer" was it so "beneficial" though ? That is the thing I cannot understand. 1787860907 Like what ? 1787861201 Why cannot the deaf person read what it says on the display ? Teletext (subtitles) was originally bought in as a service to the deaf and I can...

Sign language on train route information displays (and station departure boards)

I cannot agree. I would love to know how much it cost, I'd be amazed if it were not tens of thousands of pounds, more probably hundreds of thousands, and that's if the cost of the displays capable of accepting video is ignored. BTW, why else would they need those kind of displays ? Furthermore...

Sign language on train route information displays (and station departure boards)

Very interesting. How many people learn only sign language and not normal written English ? Surely anyone taking that option would severely limit their options in (and enjoyment of) life ?

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

Parkway stations are different entirely as they are aimed at encouraging motorists to use the train, but why would the station having a car park stop people using public transport or cycling or even walking ?

Sign language on train route information displays (and station departure boards)

We went to Doncaster today and I was a bit surprised, to put it mildly, to see the information on the trains route information displays in sign language (it was a Northern class 150). Then at the station most of the departure boards also had the same sign language on the dsiplays. Basically it...

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

I will avoid diverting this thread into the political area of what is authoritarian and confine myself to saying I think it is authoritarian.

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

The station is not in central Cambridge it is in an out of town location 1787843617 The station is in an out of town location, thus the "valuable narrow street space" argument is not relevant. 1787843738 What you are basically saying is they are trying to force people onto public transport to...

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

A station without a car park ? How many stations, particularly newly opened ones on "out of town" brownfield sites, have no car park ? I am saying it is authoritarian because they are deliberately making it awkward to use a car to catch a train, i.e. they are being anti car. 1787843439 Exactly

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

I was shocked to hear in the Railway Magazine that the new Cambridge South station not only has no parking, but even has CCTV to monitor local roads for "unauthorised stopping with penalties for those who fail to comply". Shades of airports ripping off people by charging them for the "privilege"...

Railway Performance Society "Fastest Times" over the "main" main lines (Jul 2026 edition)

Without wanting to divert this thread, I cannot let that comment pass.... I fundamentally disagree that leaning out of the window is "totally unacceptable", particularly on a heritage line. We'll drop it now !

Railway Performance Society "Fastest Times" over the "main" main lines (Jul 2026 edition)

Accidental speeding (e.g. the 1969 Morpeth accident) is not the same thing at all as an experienced driver making up time where he knows it to be safe. Surely they are completely different ? 1787689476 97m 10sec for 188.4 miles to York (from the RPS distance charts) equals 116.0mph
