I have every sympathy with anyone trying to get away with not complying with idiotic rules.....

50th anniversary of the Bressingham footplate ban (which was overturned the following year)

Or the ambulance chasing lawyers.... There really is no such thing as a free lunch is there ? Some think no win no fee lawyers are a Godsend, but we all pay for that with our increasingly regulated and restricted lives......

50th anniversary of the Bressingham footplate ban (which was overturned the following year)

Just read a fascinating article in my back volume of Railway Magazines (1977), April p180. It shows the 1970s weren't as free as we appear to think, though they came to the right decision in the end.... The potted version was that a Mr C.H. Hewison (Chief Employment Inspector at the Railway...

Why did the Bluebell Railway have to pay landfill tax on the material removed from Imberhorne cutting ?

I'd have thought it's a similar principle as older locos having "grandfather rights" to use the network despite maybe having pollution levels which are not legal these days. It's basically that stuff should not be imposed retrospectively, there's an argument that they effectively retrospectively...

Why did the Bluebell Railway have to pay landfill tax on the material removed from Imberhorne cutting ?

I understand the principle of the landfill tax (though taxing the responsible disposal of waste was always going increase to fly tipping, which it has big time) but I cannot see how it was considered justifiable to tax the landfilling of waste that was already landfilled. It was effectively just...

Why did the Bluebell Railway have to pay landfill tax on the material removed from Imberhorne cutting ?

Bit of a niche question this ! When the Bluebell Railway cleared the Imberhome cutting tip (i.e. waste material that was already landfilled....) why did they have to pay landfill tax on it ? ! ?

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

Well it seems they were building it to go too fast..... HS2 failings blamed on high-speed focus and political pressure : BBC news Another interesting theory on the net : The central lesson was think slow, act fast - work through the hard planning properly upfront so that when you start...

What was the maximum speed of the diesel locos 10000/10001 ?

I was reading a past article in the Railway Performance Society fastest times supplements that dealt with fastest times with early BR diesel locos, including 10000 and 10001. And it set me wondering what the maximum speed of 10000 and 10001 was, though the less obvious question was did they have...

How many trains use the Joan Croft flyover (North Doncaster Chord) these days ?

Would its build have been economic at 12 trains a day ?

How many trains use the Joan Croft flyover (North Doncaster Chord) these days ?

Thanks for that, is that typical ? Where are they going from and to (if that page tells me I cannot understand it ! ) ?

How many trains use the Joan Croft flyover (North Doncaster Chord) these days ?

I can remember them building the Joan Croft Flyover (North Doncaster Chord) back in 2013 and could understand how it would be very useful for all the coal trains to the Aire power stations, but since two out of the three power stations have now shut the question is how many trains use the...

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

It's what I call "OIMBY" (Only In My Back Yard), the opposite of "NIMBY". 1776080636 It isn't just time saving, driving on a through route at 20mph is unbelievably frustrating, one literally feels one if hardly moving. There is also speeding tickets. We have all been trained as drivers that if...

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

I'll tell you an interesting sidelight on NIMYISM, or rather the inconsistent attitude to it. One of the arguments most commonly bought up by adherents of a blanket 20mph in built up areas is that "the locals want it". I am quite prepared to believe (if the boundary of those surveyed is "nicely"...

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

That's a bit contentious but what is not is that HS2 trains would not be of any use to them as there will be no station in the Chilterns. Unlike the M40, which they could actually use once it was built !

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

I specifically chose England because HS2 was never planned to go to Scotland. As regards the length of the UK I don't think north of Edinburgh or possibly Aberdeen (and certainly not north of Inverness) is particularly relevant for the purposes of high speed inter city travel planning..
