Class 158s : air con, scandalously still poor.

So why, in 23 years. have they not done so.......

Class 158s : air con, scandalously still poor.

Funnily enough I was actually going to get on the 16.33 to Chester (it`d overtaken the delayed 16.21 at Llandudno), but got straight back off it when I experienced the heat inside it. I hoped the 16.21 would be a class 175 (not only would the air con likely to be working but the 175s must be the...

Class 158s : air con, scandalously still poor.

I was travelling from Colwyn Bay to Sheffield today. Hot ? It was roasting. The first of two trains I could catch turned up, an Arriva Wales 158, I got on it and thought I can't cope with this, the air con wasn't working and it was sweltering. So I got back off to await the following service...

Ex GCR Barnetby to Gainsborough line (via Brigg)

Thanks for those answers chaps. So they are rebuilding some of the line, that`s good news. On average, around how many freight trains would use the route per week now ? It`s just so I can put a footnote (in pencil ! ) in the above mentioned book.

Ex GCR Barnetby to Gainsborough line (via Brigg)

I'm just reading Stephen Gay's book "Through Kirton Tunnel" about the ex GCR line from Sheffield to Cleethorpes. In it he states that at the time the book was written (in 2004) the only booked trains on the line from Barnetby to Gainsborough* were the three e/w Saturdays only passenger trains...

    East Midland Trains strikes

To be frank I`d rather have a Pacer than a C150. As regards leg room there`s not much to choose between them (they`re both poor) but Pacers have a better view out and the seat backs are lower so you don`t feel as claustrophobic. One of my pet hates about new type seats is the fact the backs are...

    East Midland Trains strikes

Thanks for that. Does that mean it`s settled or may there be more in the future ?

    East Midland Trains strikes

Ahh right, I assume you mean the stopping service via New Mills, I'd forgotten about that, good thinking Batman. So, effectively, the number of services between Man and Sheff would be down 33% rather than down 50%. Apart from it taking about 60% longer of course ! --- old post above --- ---...

    East Midland Trains strikes

Oh dear..... I've been planning a NW Rover ticket for the last months but living in Sheffield means I've really got to travel to Manchester as via Leeds takes a lot longer. Unfortunately ASLEF have decided to strike meaning, as far as I'm aware, that there will be no (or few) EMT services...

    Preserved railways : passenger statistics

I read an article (on the Bluebell Railway's proposed purchase of its line) in the December 1961 edition of the Railway Magazine which really does throw into sharp focus the achievements of the preservation movement in this country. To quote : "Even if the line could be bought, it includes...

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

I sent an E mail to the three train companies which I would normally use (EM trains, EC trains & XC trains) asking about their attitude to noise in the "Quiet coach" and in particular overspill from personal stereos. This is the reply from East Midland Trains : The quiet coach should be a...

Journey restrictions between Sheffield & Manchester

That link may not answer my question, but it`s bleedin` useful anyway, I`ve put it in my favourites !

Journey restrictions between Sheffield & Manchester

I was under the impression some of the rules are different for return tickets and season tickets (e.g. that a service used with an "add on" ticket doesn`t have to stop at the boundary station) but are the permitted routes the same for a return ticket and a season ticket ? And is there anyway to...

Cheapest way to book 1st class advance tickets Sheffield to Aberdeen ?

Thanks for all your help. Used the earlier advised link to get straight on to the East Coast site when it opened for the date we wanted and I've just booked two outbound seats York to Aberdeen First Class for £80, that's £40 each, which I'm happy with. The cost for tickets (which ended up on...

Problems booking Leeds-Scarborough tickets and selecting seats

Thanks for that, I`ve just used that advice to get the seats we want !

Journey restrictions between Sheffield & Manchester

Does Sheffield to Stalybridge include the Hope Valley line and the route via Leeds/Huddersfield ? If it did that'd be really handy because I could then pick up the NW Rover area at Leeds and thus get access to the S&C and/or the route to Carnforth. Effectively it'd extend the NW Rover area down...
