Journey restrictions between Sheffield & Manchester

I`m thinking of buying a weekly season ticket between Sheffield and Manchester (so I can use a NW Rover) for £81.80. It says the ticket is "valid by any route option shown in the journey planner where the journey can be made by one ticket". What does that actually mean ? Is it valid via Leeds ...

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

I sent an E mail to the three train companies which I would normally use (EM trains, EC trains & XC trains) asking about their attitude to noise in the "Quiet coach" and in particular overspill from personal stereos. This is answer from East Coast trains : We intend the Quiet Coach, Coach...

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

I don't mind the odd conversation, provided it doesn't go on and on and on because, unfortunately, humans naturally try to hear things even if you really really don't want to.... But the tinny overspill from load personal stereos is really annoying to me, and, I know for a fact, to many other...

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

So where do those of us who hate other peoples noisy music go ? Use our cars instead ? Not only would that cost train companies money, but it`d make the roads even more crowded than they are already......

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

I agree with you on that. I think it'll be my idealistic streak. I don't like it and, officially, they shouldn't be doing it ! Two reasons to get annoyed by it !

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

Does anyone on here know what the advice to staff (from their employers the rail companies) is when it comes to dealing with noise in the "Quiet coach", particularly personal stereo "overspill". In addition, are staff instructed to be "proactive" about noise in the "Quiet coach", or just to...

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

I have to say I don`t find the "Quiet coach" any less full than any other coach (which is at the end of the train). Sometimes they actually seem more full.

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

I tend to find First class coaches are quieter than most "Quiet coaches". That's one of the main reasons I travel First class, the other passengers tend to be more courteous... --- old post above --- --- new post below --- Ironically, provided they aren't talking too loud into them and...

"Quiet coaches" : what constitutes unacceptable noise ?

I've noticed more and more personal stereos in "Quiet coaches" which are anything but quiet. On a train back from Leicester today I could hear one from 4 rows back ! Which begs the question what is a "Quiet coach" ? What constitutes unacceptable noise ? Most significantly, how do guards (or...

How to work out how long a London Underground journey will take.

I would advise anyone who uses London Underground even once a year to get an Oyster card, though make sure you always remember to touch out at stations or it whacks on a huge extra amount. If you don't get an Oyster card you'll really get ripped off with the ticket prices, they're unbelievably...

How to work out how long a London Underground journey will take.

I was thinking of putting this in the London Underground forum but it's actually quite a useful bit of info which may not be fully publicised there, and it also may be useful for those connecting through London stations. You can use the TFL website but you may not have access to the latter when...

Problems booking Leeds-Scarborough tickets and selecting seats

When you say you can book the exact seat you want on EC trains, how do you do that ? ! ? I went on as a test and it gives you the normal options of airline / table / forward / backward etc etc, but I couldn't see where it allowed you to pick the exact seat on the train like Eurostar and Renfe...

Problems booking Leeds-Scarborough tickets and selecting seats

I did in fact end up buying the tickets using TPs telesales department. But surely that just begs the question if they can do it there, why not Online ? Do they use completely different systems ? Surely the systems must be integrated with each other at the very least ? --- old post above --- ---...

Problems booking Leeds-Scarborough tickets and selecting seats

Both, but mainly I wanted to ask a couple of questions. The first, about why the price went up on the bookings, was helpfully answered. The second whether it`s possible to book a specific seat. An extension to this was why some train companies don`t let you book a specific seat when some do.

OK, but that just makes EMT and TP (who we usually book with) look even worse !

Problems booking Leeds-Scarborough tickets and selecting seats

Last year we travelled to Morocco by train, and both Eurostar and Renfe let us book the exact seats we wanted on each train, so how come British train companies don't let you do that ? Whenever me and the wife travel together we usually travel First class (if we can get a reasonable price) and...

Problems booking Leeds-Scarborough tickets and selecting seats

I did what you suggested and have finally got through to the checkout page for the "cheaper" amount. However, why do these Online booking sites always offer a couple booking together two seats at a table of four, when we'd far rather have the two seats at a table of two ! It's the same with...

Problems booking Leeds-Scarborough tickets and selecting seats

It's just happened to me again ! ! ! TP finally E mailed me my password, I went back into their website to buy the tickets (I deleted all my cookies first ! ), the site offered me the cheaper tickets, I logged in, the site took me straight to "update my details", I tried to bypass this but...

Problems booking Leeds-Scarborough tickets and selecting seats

Partly because I`m going with the wife (she hates noisy kids and personal stereos even more than me, if that`s possible) I thought it wise to go First class. Also the train to Scarborough may be pretty full on a Summer Saturday, esp if it`s a nice day ! We`re actually travelling from Sheff but...
