    XC enforcing invisible reservations

That`s rubbish. I have to say I`m surprised at the implication from this and other posters that passengers already in seats subsequently "reserved" by someone else just got up and moved. What is wrong with the good old British sense bolshiness and of not wanting to let other people push them...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

Obviously reservations would not be needed if there were more seats.... But the problem with short notice seat reservations is they are incapable of ascertaining if the seat is already taken. I agree that the scrum you sometimes get to find a seat is unpleasant, but I have to say I can`t...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

I think we`re getting to the nub of the type of people who think short notice seat reservations are a good thing. I can only say you wouldn`t be kicking me out of the seat, even the train manager wouldn`t be, it`d need a British Transport Policeman to explain to me why I should vacate my seat...

Absolutely, couldn`t agree more. The only thing I don`t understand is how anyone could argue differently......

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

Why is it unfair ? ! ? It matters 100% when it was reserved. When you used the system how did you feel about possibly evicting someone who may have sat in the seat before you even got on the train ? Did you even think about it ? Just answering "that`s the system so I just used it" is no...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

So, if it makes no difference to how much income they get, why did they ever think it was a good idea ? ! ? --- old post above --- --- new post below --- But it`s completely different ! Not only is it completely unfair (that someone who may well have "reserved" that seat after I`d already...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

We will have to agree to disagree, but we were all talking about it in the shop today. My two staff don't use the train that often so can be considered unbiased in this regard, neither of them could understand why any train company would bring in such a system or how they could possible think it...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

Let`s get back to basics, why is any train company reserving seats so that some people can reserve at the last moment over anyone else ? Take this theoretical example. I get on at Sheff to travel to Edinburgh, someone gets on at Donc and there`s no seat. What`s to stop him then using his phone...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

Just to clarify this, if one was travelling on a day return ticket bought at a station (or a rail rover) one could still get a 10 minute seat reservation ? Not that I think short notice seat reservations are acceptable anyway I hasten to add. They`re only acceptable if you`re not asking someone...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

This is how I see it, there are only a certain number of seats on a train, seat reservations allow people to jump the queue (effectively) for a seat. Now if it`s clear on the seats exactly when they`re reserved from the point any particular passenger gets on the service then being able to...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

Sorry, are we suffering from a breakdown in communication here ? You get on a train, there`s a choice of unreserved seats, you pick one, the train fills up so there aren`t many (or even any) seats left. Half way though the journey someone gets on and says I`ve reserved that seat 10 minutes ago...

    XC enforcing invisible reservations

Sorry if this question has already been asked before, my point refers quite specifically to this new instant online ticket booking that XC (and possibly other TOCs) may introduce. Is it really the case that you could get on a train, pick an unreserved seat which then subsequently becomes...

    CrossCountry/SWT to withdraw quiet carriage?

To be honest I find the noise from headphone overspill even more annoying than mobile phone conversations..... Quite apart from anything else at least mobile phone conversations eventually come to an end, people listening to music on their (non personal) personal stereos can go on for the whole...

    CrossCountry/SWT to withdraw quiet carriage?

I`m a bit behind on learning about Cross Country Trains ditching their Quiet Coaches, but I have to say it`s really rather depressed me. The tinny overspill from other passengers headphones is something I find intensely irritating, it`s actually enough to ruin a journey for me. How I yearn for...

Level crossings : eliminating them "a good thing".

I think you`re forgetting the salient fact, crossing are used by trains and road vehicles/pedestrians. It`s not just about the trains..... So, if I'm out for a hike somehwhere in the middle of nowhere, or I use a crossing to get somewhere without a half mile detour and I get to (what once...

Level crossings : eliminating them "a good thing".

I don`t fully agree with you. I think some people will try to jump the lights whatever, but if all drivers had more confidence that they`d not be there waiting for ages with no train (like I have been a few times at Rossington) I feel fewer would try to run the crossings. --- old post above ---...

Level crossings : eliminating them "a good thing".

Could someone please explain to me why it's considered a positive when Network rail manage to close a level crossing or path crossing ? It's certainly not a positive for those who use them (unless a bridge is built, which is relatively uncommon)..... I have to say I think all this stuff...

    Class 158 question !

Yes Celtic sounds more like it.

    Class 158 question !

I always think the pattern looks vaguely Egyptian. I am right that all Class 158s have the same pattern don't they ? If so surely they must have put some thought into what was going to go there, so what is it ? Someone must know !

Railway magazines which cover history & preservation as well as modern.

I agree the standards of the articles is a bit inconsistent. I also don`t understand how, when they`ve got the whole of the railways world to go at for articles to only fill one magazine they publish articles like visiting all the stations with names of only three letters ! How contrived is that...
