    Class 158 question !

Here's something I've often pondered as I've travelled on Class 158s over the years. What, if anything, is the pattern meant to represent which is etched onto the glass sides of the luggage shelves at the end of the carriages ? ! ?

Railway magazines which cover history & preservation as well as modern.

As I said in a previous post the articles on WWI & WW2 railways in the July RWM were actually very interesting. However, why does their letters editor persist in printing letters congratulating the RWM as being the best thing since sliced bread ? ! ? It's nauseating ! ! ! I quote a particularly...

Railway magazines which cover history & preservation as well as modern.

To be fair, I have to say I think the articles on railways at war in the current RWM are very interesting.

Durham coast line : Why hasn't Peterlee got a railway station ?

I went to Peterlee today but had to catch a bus from Hartlepool. To make matters worse the bus didn't even go from outside Hartlepool station, and to rub salt into the wound it was virtually full.... There are some really rather small places which have had a new or reopened station, surely...

Railway magazines which cover history & preservation as well as modern.

I'd have thought there were quite a few people who wanted to keep up with the railway scene but haven't the money/time/shelf space to get more than one magazine. Thus, if the RWM is to be believed, it really isn't a surprise that they have the greatest circulation. The RWM's content has defn...

Railway magazines which cover history & preservation as well as modern.

I haven't got the time to read (or shelf space to store....) more than one railway magazine so does anyone have any suggestions of railway magazines on the market which cover all areas of the railway scene ? The Railway Magazine is the obvious one and I've been getting it for years in fact...

The increase in rail usage, nothing to do with privatisation ?

Well all I can say is that we went down to Little Brampton on Friday, it's about 20miles south of Shrewsbury, and (including a 45 min stop for lunch) it took five and a half hours ! The M1 was very slow due to congestion, then became a car park at junction 25 with the signs saying there was a...

The increase in rail usage, nothing to do with privatisation ?

I agree with the former, but not so much the latter. The newer stations generally have fairly low passenger figures (relatively speaking, I doubt all of them together would match just one of the top 10 stations) and compared with the number of existing stations there aren`t really that many of them.

The increase in rail usage, nothing to do with privatisation ?

I'm sick to death of supporters of rail privatisation banging on about how successful it's been, "just look at the huge increse in rail usage" they say. But how much is actually to do with privatisation ? Even if we ignore the increase in money spent on the railways I think the main causes of...

New Hitachi Inter City Express Trains "to have 18% more seats than an HST"

I was somewhat optimistic when I read on this thread that the IEP class 800s were to have passenger comfort (legroomwise) and views (seats aligning with the windows) prioritised. But having seen the picture of the mock up interior in this month`s Railway Magazine (May p7) I have to say my...

"Bridge To The Future" running total.

I`ve just given £50 to the GCR "Bridge To The Future" appeal. Does anyone know if there`s a page on the web giving the running total so far ?

New Hitachi Inter City Express Trains "to have 18% more seats than an HST"

I definitely agree with this, though things have now changed for us since our own new arrival ! But before Daniel turned up we would go to quite some lengths to get a table for two reserved. I've read some of the earlier quoted specs of the IEPs and I feel rather more confident about them...

New Hitachi Inter City Express Trains "to have 18% more seats than an HST"

My cynical opinion of TOCs would suggest to me they`ll try to cram in more seats in at the expense of leg room, it may, or may not, also be at the expense of a view out of the window or a view of a window pillar, an excessively wide window pillar at that. On that subject, is the IEP better or...

New Hitachi Inter City Express Trains "to have 18% more seats than an HST"

I thought they microwaved pre mad bacon butties on EMTs ! (they're crap) --- old post above --- --- new post below --- If that's true that IEP will have 5cm more legroom that's great, I can't wait in fact. The leg room on a XC HST is 26 to 27in, on a XC it's about 27in and that`s very...

The original HST Mk3s were relatively low density but the EC and XC refurbed ones most certainly are not !

New Hitachi Inter City Express Trains "to have 18% more seats than an HST"

18% longer coaches ? ! ? If it were that simple how come BR didn't do that when they designed the HST or the IC225 ? I thought having a longer train introduced problems with platform lengths etc ? And longer coaches caused gauging issues ? --- old post above --- --- new post below --- EMT...

New Hitachi Inter City Express Trains "to have 18% more seats than an HST"

I read in the Railway Magazine that the new 9 car Hitachi express sets for the East Coast would have "18% more seats than a 9 car HST set". Is that really the case ? And if so how does anyone know how they`ll do that without reducing legroom ? The current refurbished East Coast and Cross...

Class 158s : air con, scandalously still poor.

Sorry, I can't accept that. In hot weather a class 158 with 4 windows open cannot possibly be as cool as a class 156 with 12 windows open. And I repeat that if the air con is so unreliable and the TOCs cannot or will not sort it out, then I personally would want more opening windows. I cannot...

Class 158s : air con, scandalously still poor.

It's more than a few weeks that the non working air con leads to an excessively warm Class 158, though I accept the kind of temperatures we're having at the moment only occur for a few weeks a year ! But just look what you've said, they're not going to do XXXX for the convenience of passengers...

Class 158s : air con, scandalously still poor.

I am most certainly not exaggerating. It was 27 degrees in the shade yesterday and a coach with windows acts like a greenhouse. As I said earlier I was using a map as a fan to try and cool down and at least three other people were also using fans of various descriptions as well. It was so...
