LNER (and other TOC) Named Trains

4L36 08:12 Wentloog-Felixstowe North & 4V36 22:45 return is known as ‘The Wine Liner’. 1766844213 It was a nice touch to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.

Could railway shift work be improved or made more gradual?

Hidden is very strict for traincrew. No more than 12hrs in one day, no more than 72hrs in one week & no more than 13 consecutive days. 12hrs rest must also be taken between safety critical turns. In addition to this each depot/operator has a set limit for driving hours without a physical needs...

On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

Assisting is one thing, officially trying to amalgamate them is in a totally other league.

On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

I cannot imagine that for one moment. I’d happily be corrected but it sounds so out of touch with reality mate.

On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

They tried that many years ago on Anglia Railways CrossLink and why the senior conductors office and local door switch was either side of the 3-car class 170 buffet bar. Was never going to happen and any plans were scuppered as some Liverpool Street employees were Muslim and refused to handle...

    Station pubs (part two?)

Yes cheers. Cant believe I’ve missed it. Will call in in the next couple of months as still need to tick the Boston Spoon & it’s another excuse to visit Heckington Windmill.

    Station pubs (part two?)

I haven’t noticed that. Just thought it was Starbucks there now where you could sit down.

    GBR and Staff Travel

Yes both have happened many times over the years especially the last bit. Railway Family and all that

On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

Who is going to top up and monitor these machines? Trains get switched round all the time due to service disruption. It’s quite obvious why it’s not been done before.

Greater Anglia - Trainee Driver - Recruitment Discussion

Ipswich has two links. One works everything including Intercity services to/from London. The other is just the Ipswich Regional routes to Harwich Intl, Cambridge, Peterborough, Felixstowe, Lowestoft & as they call it ‘across the top’ from Lowestoft to Norwich. They have just a few night shifts...

On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

Long may it last. I think it’s just wonderful and why LNER has such a high uptake in 1st class. Recent observations at Peterborough & York has seen almost all seats occupied on Anglo-Scottish services. A mate of mine uses it all the time and has often struggled to get a seat as never reserves...

Brent Cross West - a missed opportunity for Park & Ride?

Yes, got to agree with this.

    Bad seat back tables.

You bet i can. It’s my personal choice with or without wearing my super-specs. So comfy resting my feet on it. Don’t get what gripe a few have with it :D

    Bad seat back tables.

Fair enough. Must say I’ve never tried to use a laptop on one of those before and don’t even own one anymore.

A career as a train driver

Books & newspapers are fine. You can’t get traced for looking at those. Doesn’t really matter about keeping yourself occupied as a major part of train drivers job is very mundane. Anyone who struggles with doing nothing may find it to be an unsuitable career choice.

On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

They were very good. Some excellent deals like ‘lunch in the diner, nothing could be finer’. 1766387068 They were well patronised but obviously not profitable although many said they came close. It was the 2008 financial crash that really took its toll but that recovered. Several staff were...

A career as a train driver

I was often very jealous of the laid back attitude FOC drivers seemed to be blessed with compared to us TOC boys & girls. We are watched constantly at my operator and it’s drilled into us that absolutely no phones, tablets or any other electrical items are permitted in any live driving cab with...

On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

It’s weekends when the most trade is lost on such hot items and even though several of the more consciences members of staff ask for more they are limited to 12 or so and often sell out before Stowmarket. In the end they get weary at being so focused.

December 2025 Timetable Change - Confirmed changes only

No problem mate. As always it’s a junction of railway conversations that all get signalled on to differing routes :p

On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

We all look at things differently I suppose. After almost 41 years on the railway this is one of the least of the things I’d worry about in financial terms.
