On what routes, if any does on train catering make a profit?

I would imagine so. Anglia restaurant cars were almost breaking even before the 2008 financial crisis which NXEA then used to withdraw the service. I would imagine LNER come close to breaking even but are very heavily staffed. Everything else surely can’t and TfW must be an absolute basket case.

    Cross-Country Catering and Poor PR

I have to agree with the meal deal. One of the nicest Chicken & Bacon sandwiches I’ve ever had was a XC Voyager. Only downside is the length of time it takes to get through on busy services. I once had been onboard from St.Erth, the trolley boarded at Plymouth & finally served us as we passed...

Hopefully now the media has the story between its teeth there’s still time for a u-turn at least on the Flying Mancunian.

    “Operational Incident”

I suppose as an ex-railway employee I don’t question it although I must admit to being interested in what’s occurred.

    Cross-Country Catering and Poor PR

That is a ridiculous price for an energy drink. Can’t say I’ve ever had or wanted to try one. They smell like bubble gum. When somebody one asked for a vodka red bull I replied “i asked you if you wanted a drink not two” ;)

Catering on Trains - A Healthy Approach?

    They almost always lose money.

    “Operational Incident”

The public are not usually given any further info as to what the ‘operational incidents’ are.

Catering on Trains - A Healthy Approach?

Exactly. Like those with food intolerance issues. Unfortunately on a small scale it just cannot be catered for from a trolley.

Catering on Trains - A Healthy Approach?

It has to be remembered how heavy a catering trolley is and often for what could be quite a slight female member of staff. You simply cannot add any additional equipment such as for heating food. Unless there is an onboard shore supply for this it really is not practical or economical. Best to...

Catering on Trains - A Healthy Approach?

I can’t say that a lot of the younger generation that I know worry to much about healthy eating.

LNER - Losses and subsidy increase despite increase in passenger numbers

Even under BR trains like the flagship 3h59 06:00 Edinburgh to Kings Cross would load to around 100 in first class but sometimes only in double figures in standard on departure from York.

    New Wrexham-Chester service

Oh yes of course but it’s doing a similar thing. Was quite impressed when I noticed part of my 10:07 Preston-Carlisle on the 6th of January started back from Wrexham.

    1E15 0952 Aberdeen to London King's Cross on 25 November 2025

Sounds like not too much in the way of an inconvenience and excellent work to mitigate this from LNER & Scotrail as usual.

    New Wrexham-Chester service

At least one is going direct to Carlisle via Settle during January’s blockades.

    Cross-Country Catering and Poor PR

But it is looking after its staff member for whom is still trying their best to provide the service.

    Cross-Country Catering and Poor PR

Unfortunately that’s life. Things do not always go the way we expect. The static trolley manned by the restricted employee is better than nothing at all.

    Cross-Country Catering and Poor PR

Not at all. An announcement will usually be made. I’m sure the passenger won’t starve or dehydrate to any substantial level.

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

OMG you’ve just taken the words out of my mouth with that last bovine comment. The only other one that always comes close to sending me into oblivion is ‘can’t park there mate’ <D

Seriously, how can anyone use the railway for long distance commuting?

It can be decent at the cafe bar with the likes of LNER. I get the impression you’re not a fan of trains.

Beat me to it. Train every time for me.
