    Pilot dies f-16 aircrash

The afterburner was on all the way round the loop. That’s not normal, it would normally be shut off for the ‘down’ part to avoid powering into the ground.

    Reform UK discussion

We've had some absolute whoppers on our local community page posting where and when they were going to hang flags on lampposts. Funnily enough, the police also turned up and stopped them. Now we've got the gnashing of teeth about the police being anti - British etc. Was all very predictable...

    British Airways

Unfortunately, spares are an issue with cabin parts. Lead times are long, hence parts of seats being held together with tape. The older seats were much more resilient (but heavier) to damage. It’s also the tail end of the summer holidays, so load factors would have been higher than normal, with...

    What's your latest acquisition?

It handles 2nd radius fine, but 1st radius (like the vast majority of modern stock) is a no-no

    What's your latest acquisition?

Finally joined the Class 37 club. 37401 ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ arrived from KMRC this week. Bachmann‘s latest tooling for only £130 is pretty decent. Pictured here on my blue/grey Mk.1 rake. Hopefully the rolling stock I’ve ordered for it to run with will arrive next month from AccuraScale.

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

Seriously winds me up seeing dog poo bags tossed into the undergrowth/tied to trees. If you’re not going to bother binning the bag, just leave the poo where it lies. At least it’ll decompose.

    What's your latest acquisition?

Finally arrived after a rather long wait - The Accurascale Class 89! Just got to wait a bit longer for the decoder now… Originally ordered in June 22, with an initial estimate for delivery of Qtr 3 2023 It’s been worth the wait though, looks fantastic. Sure it will run nicely as well.

Why was the Gatwick Express originally a part of Inter-City?

are you sure that’s correct? I seem to remember the 1st class carriage was always against the Gatwick Luggage Van (GLV). Looking at YouTube videos from pre & post privatisation seems to confirm this. (Albeit the majority of videos are of 5 car sets for some reason, so the sample size isn’t that...

Air India crash at Ahmedabad on flight towards Gatwick - 12/06/2025

There is no way they can physically move without human intervention. I suppose it is possible that a short within the switch could make its state change, however the chances of both happening within a second of each other is many millions to one. In my opinion, the switches have physically...

They are not 'fiddly' at all if you are used to operating them. It's a very simple pull and lift to go from cutoff to run

Old Mill at Hotspur Press in Manchester fire: could it be deliberate?

Old Sarum airfield hangars caught fire a few weeks after planning permission was granted for new homes on the condition the Hangars were restored https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c05n1ze5d42o Funnily enough someone was arrested for arson a few weeks later...

Air India crash at Ahmedabad on flight towards Gatwick - 12/06/2025

The flickering would be the main lighting failing, it wouldn’t come back on if the RAT was providing power. I’d also doubt that the survivor would‘ve heard the RAT deployment from where they were sitting. Yes, the RAT deploys with a bit of a bang but not enough to be heard above everything else...

Air India crash at Ahmedabad on flight towards Gatwick - 12/06/2025

The 787 doesn‘t have a CVR and FDR. It has 2 EAFR (Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder) which are a CVR & FDR combined. One is at the front (with a dedicated back up power supply) and the other in the more traditional location at the back. There is fairly strong evidence that the RAT had...

Air India crash at Ahmedabad on flight towards Gatwick - 12/06/2025

That‘s a very good question. I‘ve just looked up what is allowable to be Inop for the centre fuel tank pumps. If one pump is Inop, then BOTH pumps have to be deactivated and the scavenge system relied upon to remove fuel from the centre tank. So no, there is no official procedure where both...

Air India crash at Ahmedabad on flight towards Gatwick - 12/06/2025

But it wasn’t that hot compared to other operations of 787s worldwide (Middle East in July for example). Surely vapour lock would’ve raised its head before now? At this point in the flight, both Engines would've been fed from the centre tank, albeit from separate pumps through their own...

Air India crash at Ahmedabad on flight towards Gatwick - 12/06/2025

Fully aware of how reliable the engines are. Maybe I should have phrased it as double engine shutdown instead of failure. 1750178280 The RAT is a guarded switch (i.e. it's more difficult to press 'accidently', needs a conscious decision) The crew didn't have a lot of time, so I doubt they'd...
