Should level crossings and foot crossings be closed for health and safety purposes?

Surely the big savings are when road crossings are closed. there must be many low hanging fruit in the flat eastern England.

Should level crossings and foot crossings be closed for health and safety purposes?

I dont understand how Airedale could be expanded if Kildwick crossing were to close. Its nowhere near it. Its nearer Steeton and Silsden Station. I was taken to hospital in an emergency ambulance at 2am. the crossing was down do the ambulance diverted through Crosshills. Why they dont all go...

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

It has an odd timetable. I think all the buses go back to Morecambe each night - I dont think Kirkby Lonsdale have any outstations. (Pennine/Ribble had garages at Skipton, Gargrave, Settle, Ingleton and Lancaster) So the Eastern end is badly served early mornings The first bus from Settle is...

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

This is the nub of the problem. Withdrawing a rail service is a major administrative (and probably expensive) effort. Bus services go at the drop of a hat. just look at this thread in the buses and coached section. We also need to stop buses and trains being seen as in competition. They...

    The privacy aspect of E-tickets.

There is a technique called jigsawing. You get bits of data from inconnected databases (illegally obtained and publically available data). And you look for matches. From that you build a profile of a person. The data held by the railway might be small but joined with other data could result in...

What was the worst car you ever owned.

Escort Mk 3. Horrible horrible car to drive. Hit any sort of bump in the road and it would dance around.

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

so how long do you think a bus would take from Skipton to Lancaster? The current bus takes 2h35m Train is 1h10. And how would a real replacement bus work with the current bus service. it would effectively be the same as the current Skipton - Settle service as far as Long Preston. And would a...

    Cages in brake vans

These vans were great for cycles. It was when classic DMUs were running that free cycle carriage came in (you had to pay before that). But class 15x and 14x didnt have vans so cycles became problematic.

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

in the late 70's early 80's there were some massive Saturday trains. They started at Leeds but went via Bradford FS. Often 8 cars of classic DMU's How they managed at the short platformed bentam line stations I dont know Remember, Settle only got 2 trains a day back then.

    Trainline tracking from card details

There are strict rules about holding card details in a data base You cant hold card numbers on your main database, they must be held in a vault. Not even temporary files. You access the vault using an api. You hold a token on your database as a key to the card details. You need to have a damn...

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

Is that the bus service from Ingleton to lancaster that Stagecoach just gave up, ans has just been replaces with a very poor offering at Bentham? There are plenty of buses in the Lune valley, but not at Bentham or the other Wenning valley villages. And to get from Ingleton to Lancaster now...

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

If you were to close the bentham line what would you gain. A bit of track, much of it ancient. 4 unstaffed stations and 1 or 2 trains. For the use it gets from people not using its 4 stations its prob worth keeping. Or do people from the Aire valley use the bus to get to lancaster?

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

Giggleswick does get some traffic from Settle and upper Ribblesdale towards Lancaster. But I am not sure how integrated the 581 buses are with the trains. Its a longish walk to settle. (We use Hellifield for trips east so we have a choice of Carlisle or Lancaster/Morecambe trains) Bentham is a...

Speculative : future of the British bus industry

That would make sense for cross border routes. Many routes round here do 2 or 3 counties.

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

Settle Jct could be rationalised. Its basically a facing crossover and a turnout from the down line towards Gig. Operate it from a screen in Hellifield box. manning it for 2-3 shifts must be expensive.

    Your experiences of hitchhiking

I did it in the 70's before I started driving. You learn where you can get the next lift from and where you wont. Did pick ups till about 1990 then started to consider the risks. And the hitch hikers went about the same time. All in UK. No dodgy moments.

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

I knew a bloke who commuted from Giggleswick to lancaster - long retired now. But another lady who does the same commute. Nurse at the Infirmary. Gets the crack of dawn train. I believe she walks from the station to the informary.
