In 1961, Mum put me on the school bus (a back loader with no door) when i started school age 5. Of course it was rammed with other primary school kids.
The next year they rerouted a service bus which was more convenient and i caught that. But mum could see the bus pass between the houses.

I noticed the ones round Ilkley. Stops between Burley and Ilkley still show Skipton and west of Ilkley they still show Leeds. The X84 stopped going beyond Ilkley some years ago but they are replacing stops. Do the new ones show route numbers?
Giggleswick station is only 1 mile from Settle. So people could (and do) drive to it. I do sometimes. Clapham is near the rail lines - but serves a massive sparsely populated hinterland. Rename it Keasden then people wont get so hung up on not being near Clapham. Bentham and Wennington are in...
Deltics and aircon mk2s were a major step up. Esp the deltic+8 concept. As was HST. But for me the 150 was a massive step change that saved regional railways. But it smashed the cascade programme. So intercity had to use stuff for its booked life rather than for 15-20 years then pass it on to...
I will remember that today when i drive thru settle & long preston to get to Hellifield. Where i can then get any carlisle or lancaster train back. As i said people drive a fair way to access services.
But this is the sticks. People are used to driving to facilities. There is no other choice. So townies think a station should be a walk or short bike ride away. But in sparsely populated areas people will drive quite a distance to get to a station. So Clapham serves not just Clapham but...
Surprised at the anti pug sentiment. I have had 405's 6's & 7's. All done well over 20000 miles. Current one is 407 turbo diesel. 2010, 170,000 miles passes MOT no probs. But i dont do much driving now (semi retired & WFH)
This is the double whammy. People go to work less (working from home), so the roads are quieter. So one of the main selling points of public transport - congestion avoidance - has gone. so the residual traffic drives.
So I order some new trains. who gives me a class number for them?
is there any impediment why they cant use old class numbers? Could we have a new class 101, for instance?
People fought long and hard to get these rights of way established and properly mapped. OK some of them are sill as they are for a prupose long forgotten. But in the 50's people took extreme measures, including mass trespass events on Kinder scout. We must be careful we dont throw the baby out...
Its all green here. Longer grass has gone brown but where the sheep have kept it tidy, its well green. Up in t'Dales. And it rained this morning a bit.
Are preserved railways not run under light railway orders? That allows simpler signalling (no distants???) But that comes with a 25mph limit.
Have I got that right?
