    Trivia: Overlapping station names

On the same train in Southern-land you could do: East Croydon, South Croydon Purley Oaks, Purley and Whyteleafe, Whyteleafe South

    What train encapulates your childhood?

4-VEPs, and the Uckfield Thumpers (that used to slowly cause the pictures on the walls to go off horizontal). On some warm nights, when conditions were right, you could hear the late night ECS trains going into and sometimes out of the London side of Riddlesdown tunnel (a good few miles away)...

Post Hatfield speed restrictions - how impactful were they?

It was some time ago now, but during the time after I remember having a Fri evening Kings Cross to Leeds journey of 5hr30m + which I'm fairly sure involved two sections of wrong direction single line working where we waited for some time for trains running right line to pass. I should have...

    Unusual Reason for Delay?

Also one for the old thread on meanings of text in signalling diagrams. Again, this one (on plat 4&5) is fairly self explanatory! (image from https://twitter.com/OpenTrainTimes/status/1366999015968165892?s=19)

Trivia: Station names that do not reflect where they are

Least important? It's the home of Ann Summers don't ya know?!? (That was one of my most interesting temp jobs that I've held BTW )

Trivia: Station names that do not reflect where they are

Upper Warlingham isn't "upper" at all - it really sits in the valley in Whyteleafe, and is a good 20 min walk, which is pretty much all uphill to Warlingham village itself. (Was named because Whyteleafe South used to be called Warlingham, and the Oxted line is higher than the Caterham one...

Most pointless journey for which a fare is available

The Walthamstow example a few pages up is the same price, yet a bit shorter ;-)

Trivia - Furthest you've seen someone carried beyond their intended stop

I too once let my jacket go on a day trip from New Street off to Derby with keys etc (while I went to the cricket at Edgbaston). Extra trip to pick it up - luckily remembered before it got to Newcastle....

Trivia - Furthest you've seen someone carried beyond their intended stop

I've seen a man get carried off to Carlisle when trying to see his daughter on the train with her luggage at Glasgow (even worse was that he expected to be able to get off at Motherwell and return, but was a fast one...). Personally: sailing through Upper Warlingham (well, not stopping at...

Trivia: stations busier at the weekend than in the week.

Bicester Village might qualify, perhaps not first thing compared to weekdays, but in the afternoon on a Saturday.

    Trains making unadvertised/off-station stops

Remember a few times when commuting from Upper Warlingham in slam door days when the fast Uckfield got held at the London end signal (which was a rarity!). Cue a rush up the platform to jump on: of course, these were Thumpers - if the train was busy, it led to an uncomfortable squash when...

Is Weymouth - Waterloo via Yeovil PM/Jct a Permitted route

Says in the guide on here (section 3.1.2): "Where the route is VIA a station(s) your journey must pass through this station although the train doesn't need to stop there. Where multiple stations are separated with a hyphen, you must pass through all of them. Where they are separated by a slash...

Is Weymouth - Waterloo via Yeovil PM/Jct a Permitted route

Most pointless journey for which a fare is available

I'm sure I've bought (some.time.ago) a single to Oxford from London Liverpool St before from a TVM - here it should be an Underground Z1 to Oxford, but it dispensed me a ticket from London Terminals - useless as the first trip is on the tube and it has no cross.

Cambridge to Bristol via Birmingham ?

Ah, so not so useful to get home from Cambridge then!

Cambridge to Bristol via Birmingham ?

That's a good point (though the OP indicated (?) they changed at Birmingham). I presume this might be a Covid related change to timetables that this no longer runs - how frequently did direct services run between the two?
  18. 4COR

Cambridge to Bristol via Birmingham ?

Sure other experts would be along to confirm, but the Routing Guide Yellow pages only has "LONDON" as a mapped route, and it's no shorter (or within 3 miles) via Birmingham. If searching on National Rail for this journey via Birmingham, you need 2 tickets to complete the journey, and it's...

Most pointless journey for which a fare is available

That's some walking: not only is it ~3 miles, and not only does it take you ultimately between two stations served by the same train (!), but it also takes you to Central first and then you turn round and go back west to Queens Road! :-D

Most pointless journey for which a fare is available

But no single fare exists: http://www.brfares.com/#!fares?orig=WHY&dest=UWL Of course you can do it with PAYG/Oyster, but that's not how I read the question. 1606208920 What about: Walthamstow Central to Walthamstow Queens Road. This is a recognised OSI for Oyster purposes, is only about a...
