Most pointless journey for which a fare is available

Crofton Park -> Honor Oak Park £4.70 for a paper single ticket (Route Via London not Underground) - the £3.40 "Not via London" ticket doesn't appear in the National Rail Planner - is there any valid route for this ticket...? Walking it's a bit under 3/4 mile (so about 15 min). By rail, the...

    Query on London Paddington ticket

Return portions from many stations up the ECML/Cambridge Line are valid in this way (Oxford<->Cambridge is an example - where the fares are set by Thameslink/GN) despite what Paddington gateline will often try and tell you - take itineraries/seat reservations, show the ticket code/restrictions...

Trivia: Abandoned railway lines that have been turned into cycle/footpaths

Tarka Trail (Barnstaple to Meeth via Torrington).

What's the most grim rail service available in the UK?

I think the worst I've done from memory might be Liverpool Street to Chingford and vice versa on the old (315?) stock. Liverpool St is a grim start, then you spend an age in the dark in tunnels, emerge and then travel through Bethnal Green, London Fields etc. There is a brief respite crossing...

    Manually operated platform indicator boards

I recall these down at Upper Warlingham, probably in the mid-late 80s - they were displayed (at least on the up line) in a slot on the canopy post outside the ticket office on P1. They too were stored vertically next to the post in a metal box kind of thing. You can see the slot, and the block...

Your involvement in accidents in different modes of transport?

Car : 2 - One as a child when a car pulled out in front of us. Other time we hit a deer. Bike: 7 proper ones. 2 falls off road as a kid which were my fault/inability! 5 while commuting all non-fault (I have a 14 mile each way ride to Oxford in normal times): 2 on the same roundabout with cars...

Trivia: Stations with platforms that have never been used

When was the last time platform 7 at Norwood Junction was used (and the old goods loading bay to the east side)? P7 had signage the last time I went through, yellow lines etc, but no 3rd rail. I just about recall passing through Norwood as a kid when the sidings to the south were in use, but...

Trivia: Busiest level crossings by both road and rail usage combined

Though, from memory when I last went there (I was 11, which is some time ago!) there is a pedestrian footbridge at the LC, so not quite as inconvenient as for a vehicle. Whether peds choose to use the footbridge of course...

Call to let sleeper trains use the Channel tunnel

Not quite - there are four in France (Paris - Briancon; Rodez; Portbou and the Toulouse/Latour de Carol. And the French have recently announced the reintroduction of Paris-Tarbes and Paris-Nice (in 2022 IIRC).

Can you pass through a station a second time when making a single journey?

Fine folk from here also told me (when I asked a similar question) that a doubleback is allowed when you do: A->B B->C (routing point for A) C->D via B (and onwards appropriately) I know of one location this is permitted.

TRIVIA: Replacement Bus Services calling at stations off line of route

I was going to add this, and thought that when I lived that way (many years back!) that further down the line at E Grinstead, the RRB ran to Three Bridges? (Thus restoring a long lost service...)

UK station with the narrowest platform

If we include the Underground, Clapham Common and Clapham North should be considered.

Journeys between stations that are quicker to cycle

I think Hurst Green to Caterham would be reasonable for a half decent cyclist (maybe even from Lingfield). Even with the change at Upper Warlingham/Whyteleafe, 29 min is the best rail journey I can see and it's 6.something miles by bike. Not the nicest cycle along the A25 and A22 but the bus...

Trivia: shortest time between passing two stations

Cab ride video ( - at 30:15) looks to be 25 seconds between starting at Covent Garden and entering the platform at Leicester Sq. 45 sec start to stop.

Trivia: shortest time between passing two stations

Covent Garden and Leicester Sq on the Piccadilly if the tube is included? Do you mean "passing" in that it can't call at either (which would rule this out, though the journey is literally seconds...)

Trivia: Disused Railway Infrastructure that is still visible today

Similarly there's various remnants of the never completed Ouse Valley Railway (LBSCR) from the Brighton Main Line to Uckfield (and thence beyond to Polgate). Construction (including bridges (or bits of them!) and embankments still extant) started May 1866; abandoned Feb 1867.

Trivia: Disused Railway Infrastructure that is still visible today

Similar vein: I have a feeling there is a semaphore (distant?) standing in a field just north of the old Uffington station site on the route of the old Faringdon branch line which shut Dec 1964 - unless my memory is playing tricks on me?

Trivia: Disused Railway Infrastructure that is still visible today

There is a significant piece of history that this line (the Buckinghamshire Railway) connected to that's still in place - namely the Rewley Road Swing Bridge. Designed by George Stephenson, opened in 1851, it allowed access to/from Rewley Road Station (now the site of the Säid Business School) -...

London to Brighton speed record attempt in the late 1980s/early 1990s - run now found!

Yes, that's it - the placard looks as I remember it! I also remember it was quite a warm day, and being end of July, that makes sense.

London to Brighton speed record attempt in the late 1980s/early 1990s - run now found!

I stood on platform 2 at Purley that day and watched this go through (dragging my mum and sister along - was only young!). We all had platform tickets on black (?) edged stock for something like 10p each - the ticket office staff didn't know anything about it and rung somewhere to find out the...
