    Half price Railcards

Super, thanks! 2 Together for £15 - and should get this back in a single Swindon to Heath High Level journey next year :)

Fairest way to deal with expired railcards **Not a specific dispute**

I would agree with the comments around the process of either scanning/tapping at TVM, or entering serial number plus check code of some sort to cross check at purchase time.

Leaf fall- Dry Ice Experimentation on the Northern Network

I'm wasn't arguing that : I'm pointing out that liquefaction of air (as per post 5...) is not the way that CO2 is obtained for this or any purpose... This is drifting OT... The technology is interesting - will be interested how it pans out.

Leaf fall- Dry Ice Experimentation on the Northern Network

Yes, but the amount of CO2 obtained this way is small (and not enough for all the uses). Air is 78% N2, but only 0.04% CO2...

Leaf fall- Dry Ice Experimentation on the Northern Network

It isn't - it's a very inefficient way of obtaining CO2 (hampered not only by the low percentage, but also by the fact that you must compress CO2 to get it into a liquid state as it sublimes/condenses directly from solid to gas and vice-versa at atmospheric pressure). It's a waste product from...

Fell asleep on train, woken up past the station i was meant depart at, woken up by ticket inspector now facing court summons

Suspicious, but not impossible, even without beer! I managed to regularly sleep on a 13 minute journey during my commute (but didn't oversleep once - familiarity with the line I guess..). If you have a lack of sleep prior, you would be surprised at the speed and situations in which you can fall...

Endeavour - Black Double Arrow Station Sign

And by 1971, it had been closed to passengers for 8 years!

On what routes did the Big Four Rail Companies Compete?

Fair point, though some difference between routing through necessity/convenience of paths/not running round and routing a convoluted route just to get a bigger wedge of the charges! Going the long way in the old days via the S&D I presume doesn't solve any gauging issues...

On what routes did the Big Four Rail Companies Compete?

Very interesting stuff - while the retention of business and profit makes much sense, the routings are utterly bonkers when viewed from a present time!

On what routes did the Big Four Rail Companies Compete?

Similarly for the GWR and Southern: there is London - Reading. But this is an interesting one given many years prior to grouping, the GWR, SER and LSWR all did the same journey from different London Termini, until there came an agreement to fix fares and share fares in 1858 (ref: Branch Lines...

    Stations With Largest Step Down.

Fairly sure I have mentioned this before, but Selhurst on the down fast used to be a big step up to the train. Not sure if that is still a booked call? (Used to be used a lot on Sundays for E Grinsteads)

    "Standing Ahead Controls"

    Many thanks :-)

    "Standing Ahead Controls"

Thanks for that - I'd assume there is some procedure on the side of the signaller (reminders? Does it ever occur where signals would auto-revert to red with a train in the circuit ahead of the signal, etc? - sorry, I ask as an interested outsider!) Also, anyone have images of this type of...

    "Standing Ahead Controls"

Split this out of https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/caledonian-sleeper.176365/post-5272955 : "Standing Ahead Controls" I presume is the ability for a train to shunt onto/leave a platform with the leading end past the platform signal? I'm fairly sure I've seen this at Swanage when we went...

How far away can you hear a train (in good conditions)?

Sound propagation, especially at night, can be remarkably different to the day - the presence of a temperature inversion layer can result in sound waves being refracted back towards the earth. This can result in sounds being audible for very large distances. Valleys can also help "channel" the...

    Merstham doubling back via Redhill

Fails the fares check on the routing point for Merstham? The fares check (likely) passes as the destination goes further away (so using Redhill as the routing point passes for Merstham -> Finsbury Park for example).

How Often Does a Driver Forget to Stop at a Station and What Are the Consequences?

I've only seen it once - many years ago, but a little odd given it was Whyteleafe, London bound at the end of the morning peak, where the train sailed through - I don't think there was ever any planned skip stopping at that time. Not so bad given the short walk to Upper Warlingham...

Broken (melted!) rail near Micheldever - 28/06/2021

Not seen this referenced on here, but looks like there was some substantial damage to the Up Line between Wallers Ash Loop and Micheldever caused by what appears to be a short from the 3rd rail. Looks like single line working has been in place today until the rail can be replaced tonight...

Negative easement 700948: mustn't go via Oxford

Looks like the easement is gone in today's version of the easements pdf file (21/06/2021)....
