Advice on appealing a penalty fare

Unfortunately Ascot is outside the PAYG area and it sounds as though you were issued with a Penalty Fare, which is a higher than normal fare issued to people who have made an inncent mistake like this. As you're aware you're out of time to appeal this now so my advice is to pay up to make the...

Non-paper London 7 day travelcard ticket

It's a bit of a moot point if full advantage is going to be taken of the Travelcard. A Travelcard season doesn't qualify for railcard discounts. 16-25, 26-30, Senior and Annual Gold Card do qualify for discounted off-peak PAYG fares and a discounted daily off-peak cap if you use an Oyster card...

Non-paper London 7 day travelcard ticket

Literally everyone uses contactless in London these days! You touch your card at the start of the journey on the barrier line and touch out when you exit. If there aren't any barriers there'll be standalone validators that you use instead. The back office system works out the fares based on...

Non-paper London 7 day travelcard ticket

I don't think you can get inboundary travelcards issued on paper any more. You can either: have the Travelcard loaded to an Oyster card, although if you don't already possess an Oyster card you'll need to buy a new one costing £10 use a Train company smartcard onto which the Travelcard can be...

    GWR fare increases

There's also the 'via Staines' fares to consider as well, I've not checked but suspect the Anytime Singles/Returns might be regulated.

    GWR fare increases

The DfT released a list of Regulated Fares back in 2012 and I doubt it has changed much since then. https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/regulated_flows , Taking a quick look, if I'm reading it correctly, for Maidenhead to London Terminals the Anytime Single and Anytime Day Return appear to...

    GWR fare increases

I think in this case the Anytime Day Return will be the Regulated Fare. Someone else will know for certain but I think near to London this it's to do with what is considered as the 'commuter fare'. Elsewhere it's generally the Off Peak Return that's the Regulated Fare.

Break of Journey along Elizabeth Line

Officially break of journey is valid on the national rail part of your journey. The Elizabeth Line is a National Rail service although operated by TfL who operate it as though it is an Underground line. Break of journey is not allowed on the part of your journey operated by London Underground...

End journey short at Haymarket with advance single to Waverley

Something public facing on nationalrail.co.uk saying that tickets are inter-available would at least help to legitimise the situation and stop passengers having to guess.

EMR intercity - As bad as xc?

I travelled EMR between St Pancras and Leicester this morning (10:32 ex STP) The 3.5 coaches of standard class was pretty much full, although I didn't observe any standing. If this is a reflection of passenger numbers then I do wonder what loadings are like at a busy time of the week. here...

End journey short at Haymarket with advance single to Waverley

It would be better if acceptance was formalised to give clarity to passengers and staff.

    Hove to St Pancras Commute

I’m sure @yorkie will be interested to hear about this.

End journey short at Haymarket with advance single to Waverley

Technically it's not allowed but the policy of the rail industry is that although Advance tickets are intended to be used only between the origin and destination stations shown on the ticket, there may be occasions where a passenger joins the correct train but at a later station, or alights...

    Quieter Coach Conundrum

I normally just calmly say something like 'excuse me, but do you realise this is the quiet coach?' Sometimes it might be appropriate to add 'would you mind moving to the vestibule', 'using headphones', 'turning the sound off' etc. Most people are absolutely fine but I'm really not worried...

How old are you? And what time do you need to travel?

Avoiding football and political rallies with Advance ticket.

It sounds as though the train was unpleasant but was the behaviour you encountered illegal? The football season has always started in August. Was the beer purchased from the trolley or bought earlier? I don't think there's a right to be re-routed in these circumstances.

    GTR penalty fare and prosecutions

Magistrates can be sympathetic but ultimately if the law has been broken then they must find you guilty. What they can do is exercise discretion on what the punishment is. For example they if there were compelling reasons they might give a discharge (effectively no punishment) but that doesn’t...

    Quieter Coach Conundrum

It’s not just young people who make too much noise in the quiet coach. I’ve asked middle aged businessmen making phone calls to stop or be quiet (they all moved!) I told a noisy hen party they were in the quiet coach. They moved.

Unlawful Use of SJPN by Train Companies for Section 5(1) RoRA Prosecutions

Discussion about the use of lay prosecutors has started to take this long standing thread off-topic so posts on the use of lay prosecutors has been split into a separate thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/discussion-about-the-use-of-lay-prosecutors-in-court.290879/

    Quieter Coach Conundrum

I don't think a silent coach would work in reality. What I can't see mentioned in this thread is some self policing. I've often had a quiet(!) word with people making a noise in the quiet coach and only once has it not achieved a positive result. More often than not people are simply just not...
